Aquarium light can contribute to coral paling or bleaching, especially when exposure is excessive or has recently increased. But color loss alone cannot show that lighting is the cause: temperature, nutrients, pollution, salinity and other environmental changes can also stress corals. The useful first step is to understand what bleaching looks like, then assess light alongside the rest of the tank’s conditions.

Why coral color can fade

Corals live in partnership with microscopic algae, often called zooxanthellae, in their tissues. The algae contribute much of a coral’s familiar color and provide food. When that relationship is stressed, a coral may lose algae or their coloration; its tissue can become pale or translucent, making the white skeleton beneath more visible. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) identifies excessive sunlight as one possible stressor, and notes that a change increasing a coral’s light exposure can also be stressful. NOAA lists light, temperature and nutrients among conditions associated with bleaching.

As WHOI puts it, “Bleaching can happen when the water gets too warm. Or when it becomes polluted. Or even when corals are exposed to too much sunlight.” That describes possible causes, not a way to diagnose an individual aquarium. WHOI: Why do corals bleach? NOAA: What is coral bleaching?

How to distinguish paling from more serious damage

A coral that is lighter than usual may be under stress, but a color change does not prove that it is fully bleached or dead. NOAA describes bleaching as coral becoming white or very pale after stress-related loss of algae. Translucent tissue over the skeleton can account for the white appearance.

Look at the tissue as well as the color. Peeling tissue or areas of exposed skeleton may point to tissue damage or disease rather than simple fading. The Florida Museum describes tissue peeling in white band disease affecting wild elkhorn and staghorn corals; that is not a diagnosis to apply to a home aquarium from appearance alone. Florida Museum: Coral disease

What to check when a coral pales

Use these observations to organize troubleshooting, not as a validated treatment protocol. They can help identify what changed, but none independently establishes the cause.

  1. Describe the change. Is the coral slightly paler, almost white, or showing bare skeleton or peeling tissue? Is one colony affected or are several? Note when the change began and what the coral looked like before.
  2. Review recent changes across the tank. Consider light exposure, temperature, nutrients, salinity, possible pollution or contamination, and other changes around the time the color shifted. Bleaching sources identify several environmental stressors, but do not provide a universal home-aquarium testing checklist or corrective targets.
  3. Assess light where the coral sits. The tank’s apparent brightness is not a reliable measure of the light reaching a particular coral. Depth, fixture mounting height, rockwork and water clarity all affect the distribution of light. If you have access to a PAR meter, measurements at coral placement can help describe intensity; they do not by themselves diagnose bleaching.
  4. Consider how exposure changed. A new fixture, a change in mounting or placement, or another increase in exposure is relevant context. WHOI describes coral pigments that can help protect algae from bright light and notes that corals respond to high light. This supports taking abrupt changes seriously, but does not establish a specific dimming percentage, photoperiod or spectrum for a particular tank.
  5. Observe the coral and conditions carefully. Some bleached corals recover when stress eases, while continued stress increases risk. The available guidance does not establish a recovery timeline for an individual aquarium coral.

What a PAR reading can—and cannot—tell you

PAR measurement helps describe light intensity at a point in the tank, which is more useful than judging brightness from above the water. Readings can differ across locations because of depth, mounting height, rockwork and water clarity. A commercial reef-aquarium guide explains use of a submersible reef aquarium PAR meter, including the Apogee MQ-510 as an example, and notes that PAR does not measure spectrum. Bulk Reef Supply: How to measure PAR in your reef tank

Use readings as one piece of context, not a universal pass/fail number. A PAR value does not describe spectrum, and the sources cited here do not establish one ideal intensity or schedule for every coral species, fixture and aquarium. If a meter is unavailable, comparing fixture information or asking a knowledgeable local specialist whether a meter can be borrowed may help; buying one is not a prerequisite to noticing and reviewing a change.

Choosing or adjusting aquarium lighting

When assessing a lighting setup, consider the factors together rather than selecting a setting from a single number:

Factor Why it matters What the available guidance establishes
Intensity at the coral Light varies with depth and tank layout; surface brightness does not show every coral’s exposure. The aquarium guide describes PAR measurement and spatial variation, but no universal target. Bulk Reef Supply
Spectrum Fixtures with similar PAR can provide different spectra. PAR measures intensity, not spectrum. Bulk Reef Supply
Exposure pattern and recent changes Duration and a shift in exposure are relevant when considering possible light stress. Sources identify light exposure as a potential stressor but do not establish a universal aquarium schedule. WHOI NOAA
Coral type and placement Species differ, and placement affects the light reaching a coral. The aquarium guide describes differing light needs and tank gradients; species-specific guidance is needed to choose an appropriate setup. Bulk Reef Supply
Other environmental conditions Color loss can have more than one contributing stressor. Official sources identify factors including temperature, nutrients and pollution. WHOI NOAA

A reading or fixture specification cannot establish by itself that light caused the fading. Likewise, the sources do not support a single target, dimming amount, spectrum or photoperiod for all home aquariums.

When the cause is still unclear

Color and tissue appearance can frame the problem, but they cannot identify a cause remotely. A diagnosis would require details not established by appearance alone, such as the coral species, actual light at its placement, water conditions and recent changes. If tissue is peeling or skeleton is exposed, or if the condition is worsening, seek help from an experienced reef-aquarium specialist and share the timeline, observations and available measurements rather than assuming the light is solely responsible.
