Selling Bitcoin when its price returns to what you paid is not automatically the right move. First work out what you would actually receive after transaction costs and check the basis of the specific Bitcoin you plan to sell. Then decide whether selling all, selling some, or continuing to hold fits your cash needs, risk tolerance, and reasons for owning it.
For U.S. taxpayers, a sale near break-even can still produce a taxable gain or loss. The result depends on the units sold, their adjusted basis, and the amount realized—not simply your portfolio’s average purchase price.
What does break-even mean for a Bitcoin sale?
Your remembered purchase price is only a starting point. A practical break-even estimate should account for the Bitcoin units you plan to sell and the costs of buying and selling them. The cash you receive after sale costs may be less than the market value shown when you place the order.
For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. It calculates gain or loss by comparing adjusted basis with amount realized, and disposition costs can affect the amount realized. See the IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions for the tax calculation.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Estimate the cash break-even point
For a simple estimate, add the acquisition costs for the Bitcoin you intend to sell, then account for the fees or commissions you expect to pay when selling. Compare that total with the proceeds you expect to receive after sale costs. This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for calculating tax basis: your transaction history and the particular units sold can change the tax result.
What should you check before selling?
Whether you need the money
If you need the funds for an upcoming expense or emergency reserve, that need belongs in the decision independently of whether Bitcoin has returned to your purchase price. Consider whether keeping the money invested could put an essential goal at risk.
Whether your reason for buying still holds
Ask yourself: if you held the same amount in cash today, would you choose to buy this amount of Bitcoin at its current price? Has something changed about your reason for investing, or has only the price changed? A break-even price is a reference to your past transaction, not evidence by itself that the investment is now attractive or unattractive.

How much further loss you can tolerate
Decide what loss you could withstand without jeopardizing important financial goals. Also identify what new information would make you change your decision. Writing down a review rule can help keep a past purchase price from becoming the only reason you continue to hold.

You can consider selling all, selling a portion, or holding. Assess each option against your cash needs, tolerance for further loss, investment rationale, tax-lot consequences, and custody arrangements. These questions can clarify your choice, but they cannot establish which option is personally suitable or predict Bitcoin’s future price.
How do fees and tax lots affect break-even?
A portfolio’s average purchase price may not describe the tax result for the Bitcoin you sell. The actual gain or loss depends on the basis and amount realized for those particular units. The holding period also affects whether a U.S. federal gain or loss is short-term or long-term.

For U.S. broker-custodied Bitcoin
For units sold after December 31, 2025, IRS guidance says a specific identification must be communicated to the broker by the time of sale, using identifiers the broker accepts. If the required identification is not made in situations covered by the guidance, an earliest-acquired default applies. Check the currently applicable IRS FAQs and your broker’s procedures before relying on a planned identification.
The IRS added the relevant FAQ items on December 15, 2025. Keep records supporting the units identified and their basis; do not assume a platform’s average-cost display is sufficient for your circumstances.
Records to gather
The IRS says to keep records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, and other dispositions. For gain or loss calculations, it lists the asset type, transaction date and time, number of units, fair market value at the transaction time, and basis. Its digital assets filing guidance also says digital asset transactions must be reported whether or not they produce taxable gain or loss.

Can selling Bitcoin at break-even trigger taxes?
It can. A sale that looks close to break-even based on an average purchase price may create a gain or loss for tax purposes because the relevant figures are the adjusted basis and amount realized for the units sold. Fees, holding period, and unit identification can affect the calculation and reporting. The IRS states that, for U.S. tax purposes, digital assets are property, not currency.
This is general U.S. federal tax context, not tax advice. If you have many lots, missing transaction records, or uncertainty about basis, consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional familiar with digital assets.
Rules depend on where you are tax-resident
Do not apply U.S. lot-selection or basis explanations universally. In the United Kingdom, HM Revenue & Customs says selling, exchanging, using tokens to pay for goods or services, and many gifts can count as disposals. Its rules use UK-specific pooling as well as same-day and 30-day matching rules. See HMRC’s cryptoassets tax guidance, last updated May 29, 2025. Rules in other jurisdictions are not addressed here; check the rules where you are tax-resident.

What risks remain if you keep holding?
Returning to break-even does not remove Bitcoin’s investment or operational risks. Investor.gov’s historical alert identifies volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and security problems involving exchanges or wallets. It also warns that Bitcoin does not have the same protections it describes for insured bank deposits and securities accounts. These are risk categories, not a forecast of what Bitcoin’s price will do next.
If you continue holding, understand how your Bitcoin is held and what could happen if an exchange or wallet becomes inaccessible. Investor.gov’s Bitcoin and virtual currency-related investments alert discusses these risks.
