If a protest video disappears or your account is restricted, first save the platform’s notice and preserve your original footage. Then use the appeal route for the specific action described in that notice. A post removal, copyright claim, legal request, and account lock are different problems, and the correct response depends on which one occurred.
Start by identifying what the platform did
Read the in-app notice and any related email before choosing an appeal. Record the exact reason, the content or account affected, any cited rule or law, and the action date. If the notice is unclear, ask the platform to identify the basis through its official help route.
- One video or post removed: The platform may have applied a content rule, responded to a copyright complaint, or acted on a legal request.
- Account locked, limited, or suspended: This is an account-level action. It may restrict some features or prevent access, regardless of whether a particular video was also removed.
- Copyright or legal notice: Follow the procedure in that notice. A general community-guidelines appeal may not address the issue.
Save screenshots of the notice and appeal screens, the post URL if available, and any emails. Note the date and time and keep copies of every submission and response. These records help you describe the case; they do not guarantee that the platform will restore the video or account.
Preserve the video and its context
Keep the original recording and make a separate backup. A video uploaded to a platform is not a dependable archive: platforms can remove it, and processing or editing can change the file or its metadata. WITNESS recommends acquiring original files when possible, retaining their order, documenting how copies were acquired, and preserving descriptive as well as embedded metadata. Keep a short timeline with the recording date, approximate time and location, what happened before, during, and after the footage, and who recorded it. WITNESS notes, “Your media is easier to verify if you capture the date, time and location of your footage.” Its guide to archiving video offers practical documentation advice.
If you need to blur faces, remove identifying details, or otherwise edit footage before sharing, make those changes to a duplicate. Label it as an edited copy and retain the original securely when appropriate. A separate external drive can serve as one backup location, but it does not restore a removed post or establish that footage is admissible in a legal proceeding.

Prepare an appeal that matches the action
- Use the route in the notice. Start from the in-app alert, official account interface, or linked platform help page. Avoid unofficial recovery services and people who promise reinstatement.
- Explain the case briefly and factually. State what the video depicts, add context that may have been missed, identify why the cited rule may not apply if that is accurate, and say what remedy you are requesting.
- Keep proof of the submission. Save the receipt, appeal text, and follow-up messages. Provide identity or ownership information only through the platform’s official interface; never send passwords or recovery codes to someone claiming they can unlock an account.
- Do not delete content as a substitute for an appeal. Deletion does not necessarily clear enforcement history or preserve appeal rights. Check the platform’s current notice before taking an action that may be irreversible.
Use the platform-specific route
Procedures and deadlines vary by platform, country, and enforcement type. These details were checked on October 4, 2026; follow the current notice if the interface or available options differ.

Handle copyright and legal requests separately
A copyright removal is not the same as a decision that footage violated community rules. Read the notice for the claimant, the affected material, and the response options. On Facebook, the notice provides appeal instructions and distinguishes an appeal from a possible counter-notification under U.S. DMCA law. YouTube also handles copyright takedowns separately from Community Guidelines appeals.

If a notice says the removal followed a government or other legal request, preserve it and use the response route it specifies. Do not send a generic guidelines appeal in place of a copyright or legal response. If a counter-notice or other legal filing could affect your rights or expose you to liability, consult a qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction.
Protect people before reposting protest footage
Restoring a video is only one consideration. Reposting identifiable footage can expose protesters or other people to unwanted attention or risk. Before making a public copy, check faces, clothing, tattoos, voices, signs, backgrounds, and location metadata for details that could identify someone.
