A port or Enhanced Edition may keep the original campaign while adding expansions, quests, interface changes, or controller support. Those additions do not automatically make it more faithful—or better for you—than the original PC release.
Before buying, identify the exact editions you are comparing and decide what matters most: original behavior, extra content, modern controls, or convenience on a particular device.
What should you compare before choosing?
Compare specific features of the editions rather than relying on labels such as “port,” “remaster,” or “Enhanced.” Check the current product and platform pages for the exact release you plan to play.
- Content: Compare campaigns, expansions, quests, classes, characters, items, and difficulty options. The word “Enhanced” does not guarantee that content is identical or that every addition is included.
- Controls and interface: Consider whether you prefer mouse and keyboard or a controller. Look at how each edition handles movement, targeting, inventory, menus, and interface scaling.
- Platform access: Confirm the edition is currently available for your operating system or console, and check its language and system requirements.
- Mods, multiplayer, and saves: Check support for the exact game and platform you will use. Do not assume that support on PC carries over to consoles, or that features work across platforms.
- Fidelity: Name the original behaviors you want to preserve—such as its interface, controls, or content—and verify them edition by edition. Added features alone do not establish which version is more faithful.
What can change between an original and an Enhanced Edition?
Official feature pages for several classic RPG Enhanced Editions illustrate why two releases of the same game may differ in more than resolution. Their listed additions include new content as well as interface and accessibility changes.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition
Beamdog lists the original campaign, Tales of the Sword Coast, the Black Pits arena, Story Mode, new characters, widescreen support, and “over 400 improvements” for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. The figure is Beamdog’s product-page claim, not an independent count. The page describes the game as offering “75+ Hours of Adventure”; that is also a vendor description, not a guaranteed or independently measured playtime.
Beamdog’s page lists Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and says cross-platform multiplayer is supported for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Steam’s Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition listing likewise describes the original campaign and expansion alongside added content and high-resolution support. Check the listing for the platform you intend to use rather than assuming every feature is available on every version.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
Beamdog’s Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition page lists the original campaign, Heart of Winter, Trials of the Luremaster, quests cut from the original game, 30+ new kits and adventuring classes, new spells and items, an updated interface, and a quick-loot bar. The listed additions affect both what you can play and how you interact with the game, so check which changes appeal to you instead of treating them as an undifferentiated upgrade.
Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition
Beamdog lists remastered music, a rebuilt 4K interface, tab highlighting, area zoom, a combat log, and quickloot for Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition. It also says players can turn Enhanced Edition features off to experience the game “in its original glory.” That toggle makes this edition a useful option for players who want some newer features while retaining a more original-feeling experience, though it does not by itself establish equivalence with every detail of the original PC release.

How much should console controls and platform support matter?
A console port may adapt an older PC interface rather than simply reproduce mouse-and-keyboard operation. In an April 18, 2019 Q&A, Beamdog described analog party movement, a virtual-mouse tactics mode, and radial menus for console versions of Infinity Engine games. These are historical development details, not a current compatibility guide.

That same 2019 Q&A said console cloud saves could not transfer across platforms and that mod support and multiplayer details had not been announced at the time. It should not be treated as proof of present-day support—or lack of support—for a particular game or platform. Verify current details for the edition you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which edition is right for you?
- Choose the original PC release if reproducing its specific behavior is your priority and you have confirmed that the edition you can access preserves the features you care about.
- Choose a port if its platform access or controller adaptations suit how you want to play, after checking that its content and interface meet your needs.
- Choose an Enhanced Edition if its particular additions—such as expansions, quests, interface options, or quality-of-life tools—are valuable to you. Check whether unwanted changes can be disabled where that matters.
- Pause before deciding if mods, multiplayer, or cross-platform saves are essential. Confirm support for the exact release and platform rather than extrapolating from another version or an older announcement.
Because features vary by game and platform, compare the two actual product pages and, where necessary, current support information before buying. The examples above show what some Enhanced Editions add; they do not establish a category-wide winner or a universal ranking of fidelity.
