For wildfire smoke, start with the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. Find your location, select a nearby air-quality circle, and check its PM2.5 AQI category, recent history, and trend. Use the map’s activity guidance for exposure decisions, and follow local authorities—not the map—for evacuation and fire-safety instructions.
How to check air quality near you

Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map in a browser. You can also open the AirNow app and tap its smoke-map icon; the app is free and provides current and forecast AQI for a selected area (AirNow mobile app).

Let the map locate you, search for a city or other place, or pan and zoom. On a phone, you can enter a city, town, or ZIP code.

Select a nearby air-quality circle. Check the location it represents, the reported PM2.5 AQI category, and the icon’s size or marking, which distinguishes permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and sensors.

Review the selected reading’s history and whether conditions are stable, improving, or worsening. Follow the activity recommendations shown for that reading. If a Smoke Outlook is available, it describes possible impacts over the next several days.

If another AirNow display looks different, check which pollutant it reports, compare nearby readings, and review advisories from your local air agency. For smoke events, AirNow recommends using the Fire and Smoke Map.

How to interpret the AQI colors
The Fire and Smoke Map uses these AQI categories and ranges in its current instructions (AirNow wildfire guide and factsheets):

| Good | 0–50 |
| Moderate | 51–100 |
| Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups | 101–150 |
| Unhealthy | 151–200 |
| Very Unhealthy | 201–300 |
| Hazardous | 301+ |
Use the map’s linked action guidance to decide what to do at a category. The category describes reported air quality; it does not predict how long conditions will last. The trend and history show recent direction, not a guarantee of what comes next.

What the map’s icons, plume, and outlook mean

Air-quality circle: A selected monitor or sensor gives a location-specific PM2.5 indication and opens additional details. Icon size or marking differentiates permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and sensors; the map’s display does not make one source universally best.

Smoke plume: If enabled, the NOAA satellite plume layer shows atmospheric smoke information. Its outline is not a ground-level AQI reading.

Fire icon: An icon can represent an incident reported to the National Interagency Fire Center or a satellite-detected fire. Distance from a fire alone does not tell you the air quality where you are.

Smoke Outlook: Some larger U.S. wildfires have an outlook when air resource advisors are assigned. It describes possible smoke impacts over the next several days, but is not available for every fire.

Other pollutants: The updated map may alert users when ozone or PM10 reaches a higher AQI category than PM2.5. Smoke is not the only possible air-quality concern.
Why the Fire and Smoke Map can differ from another AirNow display
AirNow’s general AQI dial uses monitors selected by state, local, and tribal air agencies. It may report ozone or another pollutant rather than PM2.5, and it may not have a nearby PM2.5 monitor to reflect smoke conditions. The ordinary interactive map emphasizes permanent monitors reporting to AirNow.
The Fire and Smoke Map is intended for smoke events. It brings together permanent PM2.5 monitors, temporary monitors, and crowdsourced air sensors with smoke and fire information. A difference between displays can therefore reflect the pollutant shown, the monitoring locations, or the kind of data available. AirNow’s guidance is to use this wildfire-specific map when smoke is affecting local air quality (AirNow wildfire smoke guidance).
Use air-quality guidance alongside emergency alerts
Use the selected reading’s activity recommendations and any available Smoke Outlook to understand potential smoke exposure. An air-quality map is not an evacuation alert system: follow local authorities’ directions for evacuation, sheltering, and fire safety.
