In the U.S., check all three nationwide credit reports for unfamiliar accounts, collection debts, inquiries, and addresses. Because a rental application may also appear in a separate tenant-screening report, ask the landlord or property manager which screening company was used and request that report if a rental, debt, or court notice suggests someone leased a home in your name. Dispute incorrect information with both the screening company and the source, and report suspected identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov.
Start with your credit reports—but do not stop there
A credit report can reveal a rental-related collection account or other unfamiliar activity, but it is not a complete record of rental applications and leases. Tenant-screening reports may include credit history, rent-payment history, eviction information, identity verification, and other data. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that most landlords and property managers use rental background checks, also called tenant-screening reports, when deciding whether to rent to someone. CFPB: What is a rental background check?
Get your credit reports through the official route described by the Federal Trade Commission: AnnualCreditReport.com. Review each report for unfamiliar accounts, collection debts, hard inquiries, addresses, and other personal details you do not recognize. An unfamiliar entry is a reason to investigate; it does not, by itself, prove that a lease was opened in your name.
Find and request the tenant-screening report
If a landlord or property manager is involved
Ask the landlord or property manager which tenant-screening company prepared the report. If your rental application resulted in a denial or another adverse condition because of a report, the adverse-action notice must identify the reporting company. You can request a free copy from that company within 60 days of receiving the notice. Request it promptly and follow the contact and instructions in the notice. See the FTC’s tenant-screening guidance and the CFPB’s rental background-check guidance.

If you received a rental debt or court notice
Use the property name, address, creditor, or case details in the notice to identify the landlord, property manager, debt collector, or court involved. Ask the landlord or property manager which screening company was used and how to request your consumer file. Use contact details you verify independently rather than relying only on unexpected calls, texts, or emails.
What to look for in the report
- A rental debt, lease, or address you do not recognize.
- Another person’s identifying details mixed into your file, or your details attached to an unfamiliar rental record.
- An eviction or court record that is inaccurate, duplicated, or missing the case outcome.
- Identity details that could have caused records belonging to someone else to be matched to you.
Tenant-screening records may not appear on your standard credit report, so a clean credit report does not rule out a rental-screening error or fraudulent lease.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
Dispute an unfamiliar rental account or record
Send a written dispute to both the company that prepared the tenant-screening report and the person or company that supplied the disputed information—for example, a landlord, property manager, or debt collector. Describe exactly what is wrong and identify the relevant account or record. Include copies, not originals, of documents that support your case, and keep a copy of everything you send along with proof of delivery.
- Identify the record. Include the report date, the property or account details, and the specific entry you believe is inaccurate.
- Explain the error. State whether you do not recognize the rental, the details belong to someone else, or a record is duplicated or incomplete.
- Attach supporting copies. Provide relevant identity documents or other evidence as appropriate; do not send originals.
- Send the dispute to both parties. Use the reporting company’s and information provider’s verified dispute channels, and retain delivery records.
- Contact the court for a court-record error. The CFPB advises contacting the court as well when a rental-screening report contains an incorrect court record.
FTC guidance says a tenant-screening company must investigate a dispute within 30 days and provide its results in writing. The Fair Credit Reporting Act covers consumer reports used for tenant screening, and screening companies generally must take reasonable steps to ensure information is accurate. For more detail, see the FTC guidance on tenant screening and the CFPB instructions for disputing a tenant-screening error.

Report suspected identity theft and reduce further risk
Use IdentityTheft.gov to report suspected identity theft and follow the recovery steps it provides. Then contact the company associated with the unfamiliar account using contact details you verify independently. Keep a dated record of whom you contacted, what they requested, and what you sent. The FTC’s identity-theft guidance also describes recovery steps for cases where someone leased an apartment in your name: FTC identity-theft recovery.
Credit freezes and fraud alerts
A credit freeze is free, but you must request one separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze can make it harder for someone to open new credit accounts using your information. It is not a guarantee against a fraudulent lease or tenant-screening report: the CFPB notes that federal security-freeze law does not apply when a report is requested for tenant-screening purposes. CFPB: What is a security freeze?

The exact tenant-screening company and report-request process depend on the landlord and jurisdiction. Federal guidance provides the steps above; state law may give you additional rights. A report can show whether an unfamiliar rental entry or related record is associated with your identity, but finding out whether a lease was actually opened may require follow-up with the landlord, screening company, information provider, or court named in the records.
