Wash a plastic water bottle with warm water and mild dish soap, scrub the inside and cap with a soft sponge or bottle brush, rinse well, and let every part air-dry completely with the lid off. If an odor or stain remains, check the bottle maker’s care instructions before trying a stronger treatment: cleaning and heat limits vary by bottle and component.
How to clean a plastic water bottle
- Empty and take apart removable parts. Separate the cap and other components only if the manufacturer says they can be removed.
- Wash with warm, soapy water. Use mild dish soap and a soft sponge or bottle brush to clean the bottle’s interior, rim, cap, and permitted removable pieces. A brush can reach narrow areas a sponge cannot.
- Rinse thoroughly. Flush away soap and loosened residue from the bottle and each part.
- Air-dry completely. Leave the bottle and its parts open to the air until dry before reassembling. Keep the lid off when storing the bottle for a while.
This is the baseline cleaning method recommended in Tasmania’s public health guidance and by the Associated Press.
What to do if the bottle still smells
First check the care instructions for your exact bottle and cap. For its own bottles, SodaStream describes an overnight soak using either baking soda mixed with warm water or white vinegar mixed with warm water, followed by washing and thorough rinsing. That is product-specific guidance, not a universal recipe for plastic bottles or every cap.
Do not combine cleaning products. Use only a method the bottle maker permits, and rinse it thoroughly afterward.

How to handle visible stains
Start with soapy water and gentle scrubbing. If the stain remains, use a cleaner labeled as suitable for plastic and follow both the cleaner’s directions and the bottle maker’s guidance. Mepal advises using mild, water-soluble household cleaners on transparent plastic, avoiding solvents, alcohol, corrosive cleaners, and abrasives, and testing a cleaner on a hidden area first. Its guidance is for its products; check compatibility before applying it to another bottle.
Use a soft cloth, sponge, or other non-abrasive tool. Scrubbing with an abrasive pad or powder can damage plastic, while a cleaner that is not compatible with the material may also cause damage.

Check care instructions before using heat or chemicals
Plastic bottles and their parts do not all share the same care limits. Use a dishwasher only if the bottle’s instructions say it is dishwasher-safe. SodaStream, for example, specifies cold or lukewarm water when handwashing its bottles; that instruction should not be generalized to other products.
Caps and seals may have different cleaning requirements from the bottle body. Dopper advises users of its products to avoid abrasives, solvents, bleach, and chemical cleaners, and to dry parts completely before reassembly. Follow the instructions for your own bottle rather than applying one manufacturer’s warnings or cleaning method to every design.

Keep the bottle dry between uses
After washing, leave the lid off and allow the bottle, cap, and removable parts to dry fully before putting them back together. Trapped moisture can interfere with drying, so avoid closing or storing a damp bottle.
