The organizer’s current instructions—not a universal packing list—determine required equipment and what support is available.
Charity walk packing checklist
Use this as a starting point, then check your event’s final instructions for required kit, water capacity, refill points, bag rules and route support.
- Broken-in footwear: Choose comfortable, supportive walking shoes or boots suited to the route. Avoid wearing new shoes for the first time on event day.
- Refillable water bottle: Confirm whether the event has refill points and whether it specifies a bottle capacity. There is no single water quantity established for every charity walk.
- Weather-ready clothing: Wear breathable clothes and removable layers. Add a waterproof jacket for rain or a warm layer for cold conditions; use sun protection on exposed routes.
- Event essentials: Bring your registration confirmation and any bib or pick-up information you need, plus a charged phone.
- Personal needs: Pack regular medication and any health or access equipment you require. Consider a few plasters or blister-care supplies.
- Route-dependent extras: Snacks, spare socks, a small pack, walking poles or a map may be useful depending on distance, terrain, aid stations and event rules.
Choose footwear for the route
For a paved or relatively easy route, supportive walking shoes or trainers may be comfortable. Uneven, steep or mixed terrain may call for shoes or boots that suit the ground and feel stable to you. Whatever you choose, wear it in beforehand and use familiar socks; comfort matters more than appearance.
Macmillan Cancer Support advises using familiar equipment and nutrition rather than trying new shoes, clothing or energy products on event day. Its event-day checklist also recommends checking the forecast a day or two ahead and again close to the event.

Carry water according to event guidance
Bring a refillable bottle, but do not assume every event has the same water capacity requirement or refill arrangements. Check the organizer’s final guidance and plan for the distance between stops, the conditions and your own needs. A hydration pack is another option for a longer walk if you prefer it and the event permits it.
Event-specific figures illustrate why the organizer’s instructions matter: the University of Sheffield’s Big Walk 2026 FAQ advises participants to start with two litres and have capacity to carry two litres, noting that most marshal points offer refills. The 2026 Walk the Wight kit guide recommends at least a 1L bottle and says refill points are available. These are recommendations for those named events, not general safety thresholds.

Dress for changing weather
Removable layers let you adapt as conditions change. Check the local forecast near event day, then decide whether to add a waterproof jacket, warm top, hat or sun protection. An exposed route, a wet forecast or a walk that continues into the evening can change what is useful.
For Shine Night Walk, Cancer Research UK recommends breathable and waterproof clothing, including a base layer, midlayer and waterproof layer, alongside a filled reusable bottle and supportive shoes already worn in. Its guidance is specific to that event; other walks may have different conditions and support.

Decide whether you need a bag, snacks or spare supplies
Keep what you carry light. A small daypack can be helpful for a longer route or for carrying layers, but check bag rules and whether there is storage before bringing one. Boston Children’s Hospital Trust says its event has no storage or locker area and advises leaving large bags and valuables at home unless needed.
Pack snacks if you need them between aid stations or have dietary needs the event may not meet. Spare socks and blister plasters can be useful on longer or mixed-terrain routes, while a small personal first-aid supply may suit your needs. Do not assume that every walk provides food, first aid, transport, water or bag storage.

Check special requirements for night walks and access needs
Night walks and long or remote routes may need equipment beyond the basic checklist. Follow the organizer’s specific kit list: for example, a British Red Cross Night Hike for Humanity requires a good-quality head torch with spare batteries. That requirement applies to that hike, not to charity walks generally.
Check the event’s accessibility arrangements if you use a wheelchair or medical assistance equipment, or need extra help. Boston Children’s Hospital Trust says wheelchairs and medical assistance equipment are welcome at its walk and asks participants needing extra assistance to contact the organizer. Its FAQ also allows service dogs where ordinary pets are not permitted; other events may have different rules.

- Read the event’s latest instructions for mandatory kit, water capacity, refill points, bag restrictions, pets and route support.
- Check the forecast and adjust layers, rainwear and sun protection.
- Set out footwear and clothing you have already worn comfortably.
