To change the card Google Wallet uses by default, open Wallet, select the card, then tap Details > Make default for tap to pay. To make Google Wallet the phone’s default payment app, change a separate setting in Android: open Settings, search for NFC, then choose Contactless payments > Payment default > Google Wallet. Menu names can vary by device.
Change the default card used for tap to pay
- Open the Google Wallet app.
- Swipe through the cards at the top until the card you want is visible.
- Tap the card, then tap Details.
- Tap Make default for tap to pay.
The first payment method you add to Wallet is initially the default, but you can change it later. At a supported contactless terminal, Wallet uses the default card if you tap without selecting another card first. Google’s instructions for changing your default payment method also explain how to identify it: swipe to the end of the payment methods, tap Edit card order, and look for the contactless symbol that marks the default. Other cards that can be used for tap to pay have a different symbol.
Use a different card for one payment
To pay with another card once without replacing your saved default, open Wallet, swipe to that card, and tap your phone at the terminal. This changes the card for that transaction, not the persistent default.
Set Google Wallet as the phone’s default payment app
This Android setting determines which payment app handles contactless payments; it is separate from the default card selected inside Wallet.

- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Search Settings for NFC.
- Open Contactless payments, then Payment default.
- Select Google Wallet.
The exact menu path can differ by device. If you do not see those labels, search Settings for “NFC” or “contactless payments” and choose the equivalent payment-default option. See Google’s instructions for setting Wallet as the default payment app.
What you need for phone tap to pay
Google’s phone tap-to-pay requirements include:
- NFC turned on.
- Google Wallet selected as the phone’s default NFC payment app.
- A screen lock and a device that meets Google’s security requirements.
- A payment method supported in your country and set up for contactless payments.
A physical card’s ability to make contactless payments does not guarantee that it can be added to Google Wallet. Compatibility depends on the issuing bank and card. Google’s card setup guidance covers adding a debit or credit card.

Fix a card that is not ready or a payment that is declined
- Card setup is incomplete: Check above the card in Wallet for a status message and complete any requested setup or verification.
- Card is not supported: Check whether your bank and specific card are supported for Google Wallet in your country; contact the issuer if you are unsure.
- Payment is declined: Google directs users to check with their bank.
- Store credit card cannot be made default: A private-label store card can be the default only if it is the only payment card in Wallet.
