Trainers can work well on paved streets and paths; uneven trails, grass, and hills may call for more structured walking shoes or boots. Try both shoes with your planned socks, walk around in them, and reject any pair that feels tight or rubs.
Start with the route, not the shoe label
Check the event route and its kit guidance before deciding what kind of footwear to try. The Royal College of Podiatry says trainers are suitable for cities, urban areas, and pathways, while uneven trails, grasslands, and hills may need a stiffer, more structured walking shoe or boot. These are useful starting points, not guarantees: match the shoe to the ground you expect to cover.
- Paved streets and paths: Begin by trying comfortable trainers or athletic shoes.
- Uneven trails, grass, or hills: Consider a more structured walking shoe or boot for the terrain.
- Wet or changeable weather: Check the forecast and organizer’s kit guidance, then decide whether weather protection matters for your event. A breathable mesh upper may not be waterproof.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust describes features to consider in athletic footwear, including adjustable laces, a stable midsole, a wider sole, heel padding, and a breathable upper. The trust notes that mesh may not be waterproof and gives Gore-Tex as an example of a waterproof, breathable material. Treat these as comparison points rather than a checklist every shoe must satisfy.
Check the fit in both shoes
Fit matters more than choosing a particular brand, cushioning level, or arch type. The Royal College of Podiatry puts it simply: “The key to keeping your feet healthy, regardless of the type of walking you do, is wearing properly fitting shoes.” Its guidance suggests trying four or five pairs, walking around briefly in each, and shopping later in the day, when feet may be larger.

#1 Best Overall
- ICONIC COMFORT: Enjoy all-day comfort with anatomical cushioning, anti-odor insole technology and arch support that uses 15% cushy plant-based BLOOM foam
- EASY, SECURE FIT: Women's lace up low top sneaker with lace-up front and padded collar to ensure a snug fit for active and everyday wear plus B+ ball girth & width in medium widths (a half girth/width more than the industry B) and D ball girth & width in wide width sizes for added comfort
- RETRO PLATFORM STYLE: Sporty and versatile water-resistant faux-leather platform sneakers with approx. 1 inch platform offer a modern boost with casual flair, perfect for travel and beyond. As seen (and loved) on TikTok.
- FEEL-GOOD FLEX: Ultra-flexible outsoles with extra grip and cushioning
- EASY CLEAN: Pre-treated with Easy Clean Repellant, a topical spray applied to the sidewall of the shoe only, to keep the sides of the shoe’s sole cleaner longer. Use water (only) on a household cloth to wipe sidewall of shoe. Individual results may vary.
- Wear your planned socks. Try shoes with the socks you intend to use on the walk. If you use inserts, bring those too.
- Try both shoes. Measure both feet if needed and size for the larger one; the American Heart Association recommends this approach in its “Treat Your Feet Right” guidance.
- Compare several options. Try different styles and sizes. Check that the shoe has enough width and depth, and that your toes have room at the front.
- Secure the midfoot. Laces should hold the shoe comfortably without creating uncomfortable pressure.
- Walk around and notice rubbing. Do not keep a pair that feels tight or rubs during the try-on.
Toe-room advice is a practical guide, not an exact fit guarantee. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust advises leaving about a thumb’s width between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. The Royal College of Podiatry’s broader advice is to judge the fit and comfort of the whole shoe.
Buy early enough to test your choice
Use the chosen shoes during training before the charity walk. A short fitting-room walk helps identify immediate discomfort, but training gives you an opportunity to discover how the shoes feel over the distances and conditions you plan to tackle. Trailwalker UK’s 2025 guide recommends comfortable shoes, boots, or trail shoes that participants have tested during training; that advice is specific to Trailwalker.

Plan for socks, blisters, and wet conditions
Socks and blister supplies can support a good shoe fit, but they cannot guarantee that blisters will not occur. The Royal College of Podiatry says moisture-wicking socks can help keep feet dry and that dual-layer socks may be useful for people prone to blisters. Wear your intended socks when you try shoes so you can assess the combination together.

For its 2025 event, Trailwalker UK recommends carrying spare shoes or boots in the support vehicle. Its guide says a spare pair can be useful if footwear gets wet and may help avoid pressure-point buildup. That is event-specific guidance, not a requirement for every charity walk. The same guide lists blister plasters or pads and medical tape in its first-aid advice.
Trailwalker UK’s 2025 guide states: “Blisters are the number one reason participants don’t finish Trailwalker.” This statistic applies to Trailwalker, not charity walks generally.

Make the final comparison
When two or more pairs seem suitable, compare them against your actual route and event plans rather than relying on a single feature or brand claim.
