Before you leave, check the official road-information service for your state or territory, then check National Weather Service flood alerts for the area. Road services can report closures and incidents; weather alerts show flood risk. Recheck close to departure, and never drive into floodwater or around a barricade.
1. Find your state or territory’s official road-information service
Start with the Federal Highway Administration’s National Traffic and Road Closure Information directory and select your state or territory. It is a way to find relevant transportation information, not a single live map covering every local road. The directory showed a last-updated date of April 20, 2026 when retrieved.
2. Check reports for your intended route
Open the official state, regional, or local road-information service and look for closures, incidents, and road conditions along the route you plan to take. Some services use 511 branding; the available information and tools depend on the location. Where offered, check traffic cameras or relevant map layers as additional context. Coverage and features vary: a service may not show every neighborhood road, and the absence of a reported closure is not proof that a road is passable. For examples of how 511 features differ by location, see the 511.org FAQ and Southern California 511 FAQ.

3. Check flood alerts for the area
Check the National Weather Service’s flood safety information for watches and warnings affecting the places your route crosses. A flood alert indicates weather-related risk; a transportation service is where to look for reported road closures and incidents. Use both because they answer different questions, and neither should be treated as a guarantee that every road is safe or covered.
4. Recheck before leaving—and never cross floodwater
Road conditions and flood reports can change quickly, so check again shortly before departure. If the route is flooded, closed, or blocked by a barricade, turn around and choose a route that avoids it. Do not drive through the water or around the barrier.

The National Weather Service warns: “NEVER drive through flooded roadways – you do not know the condition of the road under the water.” Floodwater can conceal hazards or a washed-out road surface, so judging depth by sight cannot establish that a crossing is safe. The NWS also notes that six inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet. Its safety message is: “TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!” See Turn Around Don’t Drown.
