Super Heavy returns through a controlled flight sequence: after separating from Starship, it fires its engines to turn back toward Starbase, coasts toward the site, then uses a landing burn to approach the launch tower. If the booster and tower pass required checks, the tower’s two “chopstick” arms can catch and hold it. Not every test flight targets a tower catch; Flight 14, on September 28, 2026, was directed to splash down in the Gulf of Mexico instead.
How the return sequence works

- Boostback burn: The booster fires its engines to turn back toward the launch site. SpaceX’s Flight 6 account describes this burn as starting the return to launch site. SpaceX’s Flight 6 description.
- Coast and controlled descent: After boostback, the booster coasts before its landing burn, according to SpaceX’s Flight 5 description. The FAA’s environmental review describes a controlled descent using atmospheric resistance, with a return to the tower as one option. It does not establish a detailed guidance algorithm or exact steering commands for every flight. FAA environmental review.
- Landing burn and catch: For a tower recovery, Super Heavy uses a landing burn to approach the tower. Its two chopstick arms are designed to catch and hold the booster. SpaceX says “Thousands of distinct vehicle and pad criteria had to be met prior to the catch attempt.” SpaceX’s Flight 5 description.
Why a tower catch is not automatic
Returning to the launch site does not guarantee an attempt to catch the booster. Before Flight 5’s catch attempt, the flight director considered booster and tower condition, the Associated Press reported. SpaceX’s Flight 6 account says automated tower-hardware health checks triggered an abort, demonstrating that a catch can be called off when conditions do not clear.
The catch is part of SpaceX’s stated reusability approach: recovering the booster at the launch site is intended to support rapid reuse. The company describes its broader approach on its reusability page. Whether any individual booster is caught depends on the mission profile and real-time checks, not merely on reaching the launch site.

These contrasting flights show why the planned destination matters: a mission can test a tower-return sequence or pursue another booster-performance objective. The mission profile determines whether a catch is intended, and vehicle and tower checks determine whether an intended catch proceeds.

What the chopsticks do
The chopsticks are the launch tower’s mechanical arms. During a catch, they receive and hold the descending booster instead of letting it land on legs. This tower-based recovery is distinct from a water splashdown: it requires the booster to return to the launch site and the tower system to be ready for the attempt.
