SpaceX’s prominent Starship cost figures are future targets, not a price quote. Historical Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy figures can provide context, but they do not reveal what a Starship launch costs today.
What does a Starship launch cost?
No current Starship per-launch price or internal cost per flight is disclosed in the primary evidence cited here. NASA lists Starship among launch services vehicles, and SpaceX has made it eligible under a NASA launch-services program; neither establishes a commercial price or repeatable operating cost.
In its 2026 prospectus, SpaceX says it aims to reduce the cost of reaching orbit by “99% or more relative to the historical average launch cost.” That is a company-stated future goal, not a measured Starship launch cost or customer quote. SpaceX’s May 2026 roadshow deck also describes a propellant-only marginal-cost goal for airline-like operations; a propellant-only target is not the full cost of a launch.

| Figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| $18,500 per kilogram | NASA historical average for 1970–2000, as attributed by SpaceX’s 2026 prospectus. | A historical benchmark, not a current launch price. |
| About $2,700 per kilogram | NASA’s approximate figure for the first version of Falcon 9 in 2010; NASA’s 2018 technical paper reports about $2,720/kg using a $62 million advertised price and 22,800 kg payload assumption. | A historical comparison tied to the early Falcon 9 and the paper’s stated assumptions, not a current quote for every mission. |
| About $1,400 per kilogram | First-version Falcon Heavy in 2018, as reported in SpaceX’s 2026 prospectus using NASA as its source. | A historical cost-per-kilogram comparison, not a current price for all Falcon Heavy missions. |
| About $94 million | NASA’s 2018 firm-fixed-price Falcon 9 contract for Sentinel-6B, including launch services and other mission-related costs. | A customer contract value for a defined mission scope, not the bare rocket price or SpaceX’s internal cost. |
| 99% or more reduction (goal) | SpaceX’s 2026 target for reducing the cost to reach orbit against the historical average launch cost. | A future corporate target, not a measured Starship cost or current price. |
Why cost per launch and cost per kilogram are not interchangeable
A per-launch figure may be a customer price for a particular mission or a provider’s internal cost. A per-kilogram figure divides a cost or price by payload mass, but the result depends on what mass is actually delivered and to which orbit. A rocket’s theoretical payload capacity is not necessarily the mass used in a specific mission, so a per-kilogram comparison needs its performance assumptions as well as its date and vehicle configuration.
Contract scope matters too. The Sentinel-6B figure covers launch services and other mission-related costs. It cannot be treated as a bare rocket price, and it says nothing by itself about the provider’s internal or marginal cost.

What these comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
- They show historical context: NASA-derived figures put the early Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy well below the cited 1970–2000 historical average on a per-kilogram basis.
- They do not price Starship: No current Starship launch price or current internal cost per flight is disclosed in the cited primary evidence.
- They do not create a current rocket price list: NASA’s overview covers vehicles including Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Electron, New Glenn, Vulcan, and Starship, but does not provide a common current schedule of prices.
- Program eligibility is not pricing: NASA added Starship to SpaceX’s Launch Services II offerings through a contract modification dated March 28, 2025; that establishes eligibility, not a disclosed launch price.
