There is no universally best choice between a state school and an independent school. Compare the specific schools your child could attend: their learning and support, curriculum, admissions prospects, inspection evidence, travel demands and total cost. This guide uses England’s system; admissions and school-information services differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What do “state school” and “independent school” mean in England?

“State school” commonly means a state-funded school. The Department for Education describes independent schools as registered schools that do not receive government funding and often charge fees. Neither label tells you whether a particular school will suit your child.

In January 2026, 560,300 pupils attended independent schools in England, representing 6.3% of the school population, according to the Department for Education’s 2025/26 school statistics. That describes participation; it does not show that either sector is better for an individual pupil.

How to compare schools for your child

  1. Start with your child’s needs

Write down the subjects, teaching approaches and activities that engage your child, along with any learning support, special educational needs, wellbeing, friendship, faith or community considerations. Use these as criteria for evaluating schools rather than assuming that one sector will meet them better.

  2. Find out which schools are realistic options

For state-funded schools in England, contact your local council about provision, admission arrangements and criteria. Ask independent schools directly about places, entry points, selection, availability and their application process. If your child has an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, check the placement arrangements: GOV.UK says a school named in an EHC plan must give the child a place. The Department for Education’s admissions guidance explains the England process.

  3. Review the same information for every school

Check admission arrangements, curriculum, behaviour policy, the latest inspection report, relevant performance measures and the SEN information report. School websites must publish key information including admissions arrangements, curriculum and behaviour policies, inspection and performance links, key stage attainment and progress measures, and an SEN information report. Use the Get information about schools service to locate school information and related services.

When comparing scores or results, check the age group, year and cohort they describe. Look for context and patterns rather than treating one headline figure as a complete account of a school.

  4. Visit and ask about the things that matter to your child

GOV.UK recommends visiting schools; many hold open days. Notice how pupils and staff interact, and ask the relevant staff how teaching, pastoral care and any needed support work in practice. Speak with other parents as another perspective, not as a replacement for inspecting the school yourself.

  5. Calculate the household cost and practical demands

For an independent school, ask for a current written schedule of tuition and compulsory or likely additional charges, payment terms, and any bursary or assistance criteria. Include transport, meals, uniform, activities and childcare where relevant. There is no representative national fee or universal assistance entitlement established here, so confirm the current position with each school rather than relying on a general estimate.

Compare journeys, start and finish times, transport options and the effect of the schedule on family life alongside affordability. A school that looks suitable on paper may not be a workable daily choice.

How should you interpret inspection and performance data?

The Department for Education’s Compare the performance of schools and colleges in England service provides exam and test results, Ofsted reports and financial information. These sources help you investigate a specific school, but a published measure cannot show every aspect of day-to-day experience or whether the setting fits your child.

Ofsted’s 2024/25 annual report says 79% of non-association independent schools inspected in standard inspections during that year were judged good or outstanding for overall effectiveness, and 86% met the independent school standards. Separately, as at 31 August 2025, 83% of independent schools were good or outstanding at their most recent standard inspection. These are different measures and reference periods, not a head-to-head comparison with state-funded schools. Read the Ofsted 2024/25 annual report and, more importantly, the latest report for each school you are considering, paying attention to its date and inspection framework.

Inspection findings and performance figures are evidence to investigate, not a single score that settles the decision. A comparison is most useful when it brings those published measures together with what you learn about your child’s needs, school routines and actual admissions prospects.
