If a mobile game won’t download or install, first check whether the problem is limited to that game, affects several apps, or prevents the app store from opening. That distinction points you toward the right fix: an unavailable game, a connection or storage issue, an account restriction, or a store problem. Start with the low-risk checks below, then follow the branch for your device.
First identify what is failing
A stuck or pending download does not prove a particular cause. Note whether you use Android and Google Play, or an iPhone or iPad and the App Store, then identify the scope:
- One game only: Check whether its store listing supports your device. If the listing says the game is unavailable, Google says it cannot be downloaded on that device through that listing.
- Several apps: Check shared causes such as the connection, device storage, account or store settings.
- The store itself will not open: On Android, use the Google Play Store app troubleshooting branch below. On iPhone or iPad, try Apple’s general download steps and contact Apple Support if the problem continues.
Google separates its guidance into basic checks, one-app problems, multiple-app problems, and Play Store app problems: basic troubleshooting, one app, multiple apps, and the Play Store app.
Try these low-risk checks first
Android: connection, storage, updates, and restart
- Check the connection. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data works reliably; try Wi-Fi if it is available.
- Check free space. Open Settings > Storage and review available space. Google says low storage can stop apps from downloading and installing. Its guidance flags less than 1 GB free as a possible sign of low storage—not a universal minimum for every game.
- Check for an Android system update. Install an available update, then try the download again.
- Close and reopen Google Play Store. Return to the game’s listing and retry.
- Restart the device. A fresh start can clear a temporary stall.
- Check automatic date and time settings. Verify both Date & time and Time zone are set automatically if they are off. Google says that if both automatic settings are already on, date and time are probably not the cause.

iPhone or iPad: update, account prompts, and download queue
- Check for an app update. If the game is already installed but needs updating, check the App Store for an available update.
- Resolve payment or billing prompts. Follow any verification message. Apple says a valid payment method may be required on file even when the app you are trying to get is free.
- Prioritize the download. On the Home Screen, touch and hold the app icon, then choose Prioritize Download if that option appears.
- Restart the device and try again.
- Confirm age if prompted. Some regions require age confirmation for certain apps.
Apple’s instructions are in Download or update apps on your iPhone or iPad, dated March 30, 2026. If these steps do not resolve the issue, Apple advises contacting Apple Support.
If only one game fails on Android
Check whether the game supports your device
Open the game’s Google Play listing and look for its device-availability status. If Google Play marks it unavailable for your device, Google says you cannot download it on that device through that listing. A problem affecting only one title can also be specific to the game; check its error message and the developer’s support information.

Consider reinstalling only after checking save data
Google lists uninstalling and reinstalling an affected app as an additional troubleshooting option. Before removing an installed game, check with its developer how saves are stored and whether they are synced to an account. Google’s troubleshooting guidance does not guarantee that a game’s locally stored progress will be preserved.

If several Android apps fail
Clear Google Play Store cache and data only after the basic checks
Google recommends clearing the Play Store cache and storage/data as a later step for multiple-app download problems. The exact menu labels vary by Android version and device maker; use your device’s app settings to open Google Play Store’s storage controls. Clearing its data may remove Play Store settings, including parental controls and password protection, and may require you to accept the Terms of Service again. Restore any settings you rely on afterward.
Treat Google Play services data as a higher-risk step
Google advises clearing Google Play services data only if other troubleshooting has failed. This can remove saved information such as passwords and payment cards and may require you to sign in again. Do not start here when a connection check, restart, or Play Store cache clear may address the problem.

Google’s instructions and cautions are in Fix problems downloading multiple apps. If an age or family restriction may be blocking the game, check with the family manager; the guidance here does not establish a single diagnostic path for every Google family-control setup.
If Google Play Store will not open
Try the Android basic checks first. If the Play Store still will not open, Google’s advanced guide includes reinstalling Play Store updates, removing and re-adding the Google Account, and clearing Play Store cache or data. Account changes and data clearing can affect saved information or settings, so read Google’s cautions before proceeding: Fix problems with the Google Play Store app.
Factory reset is a last-resort escalation, not a routine download fix. Before considering it, back up important data and contact Google or your device maker’s support for guidance.
Check family and content restrictions on a child’s iPhone or iPad
If a child cannot get a game, ask the family organizer or parent or guardian to check whether Ask to Buy approval is pending, app installation is restricted, or the game exceeds the allowed age rating. The exact controls and defaults can vary with software version, age, and region; resolve the approval with the family organizer rather than bypassing it.
