They have separate controls, and turning off one does not automatically erase the other. Labels and availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
Memory and chat history are different
Memory is personalization context ChatGPT can use in later conversations. It may include saved details or information drawn from past chats when the relevant reference setting is available and enabled. A memory summary is only a high-level view; it may not show every remembered detail or where that information came from. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT documentation.
Chat history is the saved record of conversations in your account. A conversation can remain in history even when Memory is off. Conversely, a saved memory can remain after you delete the conversation where you originally shared it.
| Feature | Appears in chat history? | Creates or updates saved memory? | Can use existing memories? | How to remove it | Retention and separate files |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular chat | Yes, unless deleted | It may, depending on Memory controls and behavior available to the account | It may, if personalization is enabled | Delete the conversation; remove any saved memory separately | Deletion is scheduled within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions. Separately saved Library files are not deleted with the chat. |
| Saved memory | No; it is stored separately from the conversation record | It is the saved personalization information | Yes, when Memory is available and enabled | Remove it in the available memory controls; delete the source chat separately if needed | Turning off Memory alone does not delete saved memories or chats. Library files are managed separately. |
| Temporary Chat | No, while it remains temporary | No, while it remains temporary | Only if you choose Personalized; Unpersonalized cannot use existing memories | Temporary chats are not saved to history; saving one makes it a regular chat | A copy may be retained for safety purposes for up to 30 days. Library files are separate. |
| Archived chat | It remains in the account, though hidden from the regular sidebar | Archiving itself is not a memory-clearing action | Depends on account Memory settings | Unarchive or delete it through archived-chat controls | Archived chats remain searchable. Separate Library files are unaffected. |
These distinctions follow OpenAI’s chat and file retention policy, as well as its Memory, Temporary Chat, and chat-deletion guidance.

How to review or clear what ChatGPT remembers
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, a memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Not every label or control appears for every user.
- Use the available memory controls to review and remove the saved memory itself. Turning Memory off is not the same as deleting memories.
- If you want to remove both the personalization detail and its original source, delete the chat where you shared it as a separate step.
- Check other places the information might remain, including archived chats, the memory summary, Library files, and connected apps. A chat deletion does not delete a file stored separately in Library; remove that file using Library controls where available.
OpenAI states: “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.” Its Memory documentation also explains that saved memories are stored separately from chat history.
What happens when you turn off Memory or chat-history reference?
Turning off Memory
Turning off Memory stops the relevant personalization feature from being used as configured for your account, but it does not delete past chats. Do not treat it as a command to erase saved memories, source conversations, or files.
Turning off Reference chat history
If this control is available, turning it off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days. The original chats remain in history unless you delete them separately. The distinction is documented on OpenAI’s Memory page.
How to delete a chat, or archive it instead
Delete a conversation
- Open your chat history and locate the conversation.
- Open its more-options menu, choose Delete, and confirm.
The chat is removed from your account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. OpenAI documents exceptions, including de-identification and security or legal retention. Deleted chats cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support. Deleting the conversation does not remove a saved memory that came from it or a file saved separately to Library. See OpenAI’s guide to deleting and archiving chats.

Choose Archive from the chat’s more-options menu if you want to keep the conversation but remove it from the regular sidebar. Archived chats remain in your account and searchable. You can manage them under Settings > Data controls > Archived chats; labels may differ by device. Archiving hides a chat; it does not delete it. Details are in the same deletion and archiving guide.
Does Temporary Chat save anything?
A Temporary Chat stays out of chat history and does not create or update memories while it remains temporary. OpenAI puts it this way: “Neither option creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary.” A temporary conversation may nevertheless be retained for safety purposes for up to 30 days, according to the Temporary Chat help page.
Rank #4
- Start a new chat and select Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized, if those choices are shown. You cannot change that choice after the conversation starts.
- Use Personalized if the temporary conversation may use existing memories and custom instructions. Unpersonalized does not use existing memories.
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows the applicable account settings. Temporary Chat therefore avoids adding that conversation to history or creating/updating memories while temporary; it is not a promise that no copy can be retained.

Model-improvement preferences are a separate control from Memory and chat deletion. Changing whether your content may be used to improve models does not delete chat history, saved memories, or Library files. Review the controls under Settings > Data controls; exact labels can vary. OpenAI describes these preferences in its Data controls documentation.
