If an AI assistant exposes identifiable information about another person, do not repost it or assume it is true. Keep a restricted record of what appeared, report it through the provider’s privacy or support channel, and escalate it through your organization if work data or a workplace system was involved. Whether the event is legally a reportable data breach depends on the facts and the law that applies.
First, contain the disclosure
- Do not amplify it. Avoid forwarding or publishing the response with the person’s details. An AI-generated statement can sound convincing and still be wrong; repeating it as fact can cause additional harm. Australia’s Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) describes an output that reproduced identifiable people and details from an ongoing court case in a scenario presented as fictional: OAIC guidance on AI and privacy.
- Limit access to what you save. Keep a private record of the exact response, the date, the service used, and relevant account or conversation context. A screenshot or conversation link may help the provider assess the issue, but restrict access if it contains sensitive details. - Do not try to verify the information by spreading it. If a consequential claim needs checking, use an appropriate private channel and avoid treating the chatbot response as an established fact.
Report it to the AI provider
Use the service’s privacy, support, or reporting channel. Explain what the assistant produced, when it happened, and why the information appears to identify someone. Ask the provider to review the output and, where its process allows, correct, suppress, or remove it. Share only the identifying details needed to investigate, and use a private channel rather than a public post.
A request is not a guarantee that information will disappear from outputs or underlying model systems. In its case-specific findings about OpenAI, the Canadian commissioners describe technical challenges and individual assessment of correction requests. That account does not establish how another provider will handle a request or what result it will achieve.
If this happened at work, notify the right internal contact
If an employee entered customer, patient, employee, or other personal information into an AI tool—or the disclosure occurred in an organization’s own AI service—notify the designated privacy, security, or incident-response contact promptly. Follow the organization’s evidence-preservation and escalation process; do not independently circulate sensitive material to colleagues who do not need it.

Submitting personal information to a public chatbot may disclose it to the service owner, according to the OAIC’s guidance. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission advises organizations to understand what data is involved, which provider is used, how data may be retained or reused, and how rights requests are handled: Irish DPC guidance on AI and data protection. Check the specific service’s terms and privacy information rather than assuming all tools handle inputs alike.
Assess the incident before calling it a reportable breach
An AI response that contains personal information is not automatically a legally defined personal-data breach, and not every such event triggers the same notification duties. The answer depends on what information was involved, how identifiable the person is, who controlled the relevant data, what happened to it, and which jurisdiction’s law applies. The European Data Protection Board’s Guidelines 9/2022 provide guidance on breach notification under the GDPR; they are not a worldwide notification rule: EDPB Guidelines 9/2022.

For a workplace incident, involve the organization’s privacy or legal function in assessing applicable obligations and timing. For sensitive, safety-critical, or otherwise high-risk information, seek advice from the appropriate local regulator or a qualified local professional. The sources discussed here cover Australia, Ireland, the UK, the EU, and Canada; they do not determine the legal status of an incident in every country.
What the affected person can ask for
Depending on location, the parties’ roles, and the circumstances, the person whose information appeared may be able to ask an organization to explain its handling of the information or make a request for access, correction, deletion, or another applicable right. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says that using AI does not by itself remove a controller’s obligations for handling rights requests: ICO guidance on individual rights and AI.

The Canadian commissioners’ 2026 OpenAI findings discuss requests to correct personal information in training data or outputs, while noting verification and technical constraints. This is a specific example involving OpenAI, not a promise that every provider offers the same process or can make the same change.
Choose the next step based on the situation

Why a response matters even when the output may be wrong
Privacy harm is not limited to accurate disclosures. A plausible but false response about an identifiable person can also spread and affect decisions. The OAIC warns: “Inaccuracies in output can have flow on consequences that depend on the context, including reputational harm, misinformation or unfair decisions.” See its guidance on privacy and commercially available AI products.
