Neither NIO nor Tesla is automatically the stronger investment. Tesla reported a profitable 2025 and substantial operating cash flow and cash-and-investment balances; NIO reported a full-year net loss, although its operating cash flow turned positive. Their businesses also differ: NIO sells vehicles across three brands and operates vehicle-related and power-solution activities, while Tesla combines automotive with energy generation and storage, services, and other activities. The choice depends on how an investor weighs those financial positions, business models, execution risks, valuation, and expectations—not on deliveries alone.
This comparison uses company-reported results and filings available as of October 4, 2026. NIO reports in renminbi (RMB) and Tesla in U.S. dollars; the figures below are not currency-adjusted or independently normalized.
How NIO and Tesla make money
NIO: three vehicle brands plus related services
NIO Inc.’s 2025 Form 20-F describes smart electric vehicles sold under three brands: premium NIO, family-oriented ONVO, and small premium FIREFLY. The company also reports vehicle-related sales and other revenue, including parts and accessories, after-sales services, power solutions, used-car sales, and technical services.
That mix means NIO is more than a single-brand carmaker. Battery-related power solutions and services may help distinguish its offering, but they also add operating complexity; their presence does not establish that those activities are independently profitable or economically attractive.

Tesla: automotive, energy, and services
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K groups its activities as automotive; energy generation and storage; and services and other. Its Q2 2026 update also highlights energy storage deployments and services alongside vehicle operations. The 2025 filing describes investment in manufacturing capacity, cost reduction, AI, software, and fleet-related opportunities. These are strategic priorities and potential sources of growth, not proof that every initiative will produce future revenue or profit.
What the business-model difference means
The comparison is not simply a contest between a Chinese automaker and a U.S. automaker. Both have vehicle businesses and adjacent activities, but their product portfolios, geographies, and operational exposures differ. NIO’s three-brand portfolio spans premium, family-oriented, and small premium vehicles; Tesla’s reported business includes energy and services in addition to automotive. Product mix, pricing, market access, and the economics of non-vehicle activities can all influence results.
Reported financial performance
The table uses each company’s reported fiscal 2025 figures. NIO’s measures are in RMB; Tesla’s are in U.S. dollars. Their revenue totals should not be read as a direct scale comparison: currency, accounting presentation, and business mix differ.

| Measure | NIO, 2025 | Tesla, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle deliveries | 326,028 across NIO, ONVO, and FIREFLY brands (NIO 2026 Form 20-F) | not stated in the cited Tesla 2025 figures |
| Revenue | RMB87,487.5 million; vehicle sales represented the large majority (NIO 2026 Form 20-F) | $94.83 billion (Tesla 2026 Form 10-K) |
| Gross margin | 13.6% company-wide; vehicle margin was 14.6% (NIO 2026 Form 20-F and official full-year release) | not stated in the cited Tesla 2025 figures |
| Net result | RMB14,942.6 million net loss for the full year. NIO reported a net profit in Q4 2025, which did not make the full year profitable. | $3.79 billion net income attributable to common stockholders (Tesla 2026 Form 10-K) |
| Operating cash flow | Positive for 2025, after negative operating cash flows in 2023 and 2024; the cited figure does not state the 2025 amount. | $14.75 billion (Tesla 2026 Form 10-K) |
Margin measures are not interchangeable: NIO’s 13.6% is company-wide gross margin, while 14.6% is vehicle margin. Neither measure is the same as operating or net profit. NIO’s Q4 net profit also needs to be kept separate from its full-year net loss.
Cash, debt, and capacity to fund investment
NIO
At December 31, 2025, NIO reported RMB8,626.3 million in long-term borrowings and RMB5,347.9 million in short-term borrowings. Those are reported debt balances, not a complete calculation of net debt. NIO’s filing discusses financing arrangements and the capital demands of research and development, production capacity, and sales and service expansion. Positive operating cash flow in 2025 is an improvement over the negative operating cash flows reported for 2023 and 2024, but does not erase the full-year loss or remove the importance of continued financing access.
Tesla
Tesla reported $44.06 billion in cash and cash equivalents and investments at the end of 2025, along with $14.75 billion of operating cash flow for that year. The first figure combines cash and investments as reported; it should not be described as entirely unrestricted cash. These resources support investment capacity, but do not eliminate exposure to lower demand, cost increases, capital spending, or poor execution.

Why the period matters
Cash flow can vary from quarter to quarter and should be compared over clearly defined periods. In Q2 2026, Tesla reported $4.7 billion of operating cash flow but negative $1.1 billion of free cash flow, as well as a $1.2 billion decrease in cash and investments. Those quarterly measures are not inconsistent: operating cash flow and free cash flow are different measures, and the period’s cash-and-investment change is a separate reported figure. Tesla’s Q2 delivery release cautions that deliveries and storage deployments alone do not determine quarterly financial performance; average selling prices, costs, foreign exchange, and other factors also matter.
What the latest quarterly information adds
As of October 4, 2026, the latest matched quarterly financial-results period in the available company releases is Q2 2026. NIO published Q2 results, and Tesla published its Q2 update on July 22, 2026. NIO CEO William Bin Li attributed its margins to sales of higher-margin models and cost optimization, describing gross and vehicle margins as healthy despite cost pressures. That is management’s characterization, not an independent assessment.
Tesla reported $28.236 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, $1.1 billion in GAAP net income in its update highlights, $4.7 billion in operating cash flow, negative $1.1 billion in free cash flow, and a $1.2 billion decrease in cash and investments. These are Tesla’s company-reported figures for that quarter; they should not be compared against a different NIO period or measure.

Tesla had also released its Q3 2026 delivery count by October 4, but a delivery announcement is not a complete quarterly financial report. The material available here does not include NIO Q3 results, so it does not support a like-for-like Q3 financial comparison.

NIO: competition, losses, financing, and execution
NIO’s 2025 Form 20-F identifies intense competition in China and warns that competition may increase as product supply, price competition, globalization, and industry consolidation evolve. It notes that some competitors may have greater resources. For investors, that makes vehicle demand, pricing, product launches, and the company’s ability to improve efficiency central to the business case.
The filing also describes significant past losses and warns that NIO may continue to incur losses and negative operating cash flows. Its plans depend on growing sales, improving efficiency and working capital, and maintaining access to financing. Borrowings and the capital intensity of research and development, manufacturing, and sales and service expansion add to that financing and execution exposure.

- Products and costs: Supply-chain availability and component quality, product launches and mix, battery and commodity costs, and rapidly changing technology can affect execution and margins.
- Expansion and adjacent activities: Overseas expansion carries execution exposure, while the viability and economics of power solutions are not guaranteed by their role in the business.
- Competitive position: Pricing pressure and competitors with greater resources could challenge sales growth and efficiency efforts.
Tesla: demand, policy, costs, and ambitious execution
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies competition, demand and profitability, trade and fiscal policy uncertainty, supply-chain and cost effects, manufacturing and product execution, and the need to fund continued investment. Its Q2 2026 figures also show why annual cash generation should not be assumed to recur evenly each quarter: Tesla had positive operating cash flow but negative free cash flow in that quarter.
- Demand and pricing: Changes in customer demand, average selling prices, and competitive pressure can affect vehicle revenue and profitability.
- Policy and supply chain: Trade and fiscal policy changes, supply-chain conditions, and input costs can alter costs and market conditions.
- Investment and delivery: Manufacturing execution and continued investment require capital and successful execution.
- New business lines: Energy, software, AI, and fleet-related plans broaden potential opportunities but also raise execution expectations. Stated ambitions should not be mistaken for established future profits.
These are risks identified by the companies, not predictions that a particular event will occur. Liquidity and reported profit do not remove business risk, and a promising business opportunity does not establish that its expected value is reflected in a stock’s price.
How to assess NIO versus Tesla as investments
Company disclosures help explain operations and financial condition; they do not establish which stock is suitable for a particular investor or which will earn a higher return. A stock’s return depends not only on business performance but also on the price paid, capital structure, future execution, policy developments, and market expectations.
Quick Recap
- Separate business strength from stock valuation. Ask whether the company’s growth prospects and risks justify its current valuation; the reported results here do not provide a valuation conclusion or target price.
- Compare like periods and like measures. Match annual results with annual results and quarterly results with the same quarter. Keep vehicle margin distinct from company-wide gross margin, and operating cash flow distinct from free cash flow.
- Check funding needs and investment demands. For NIO, consider its losses, borrowings, and reliance on sales growth, efficiency, and financing access. For Tesla, weigh reported liquidity and cash generation against investment needs and quarter-to-quarter cash-flow variation.
- Test the business thesis against execution risks. Consider whether each company can sustain demand and pricing, deliver products and cost improvements, manage policy and supply-chain exposure, and turn newer business activities into durable results.
- Update the comparison when full results are available. Delivery totals can be useful operating signals, but they are not a substitute for revenue, margins, profit, and cash-flow disclosures.
