Pokémon’s main series did not switch from routes to one standard open-world formula all at once. Sword and Shield introduced a large, camera-controlled Wild Area within a more structured region; Legends: Arceus built exploration around a village hub and research expeditions; and Scarlet and Violet connected towns and wilderness into a seamless region with three story paths players can pursue in different orders. Legends: Z-A explores a different approach: a city organized around constructed wild zones.

How did Pokémon go from routes to open-world exploration?

The change was gradual and experimental. Each game adjusted a different part of the exploration loop: how continuous the world feels, how players reach new areas, what they do while exploring, and how exploration connects to progression. “Open world” therefore does not mean the same map structure or objective system in every Pokémon game.

How each game changed the exploration model

Sword and Shield: an open area within a structured region

The Wild Area is a broad stretch of Galarian wilderness between towns and cities. Players can control the camera there, and Pokémon encounters vary by location and weather. It was a substantial open-area step, but it is one part of Galar rather than evidence that the entire region is open. Pokémon’s Wild Area overview describes it as an area of the region.

Legends: Arceus: excursions organized around field research

Legends: Arceus uses Jubilife Village as a base for trips into distinct natural areas. On an excursion, players observe Pokémon, catch them directly or enter seamless battles, and complete research tasks. Research raises the player’s rank, which opens access to additional areas. Instead of following one continuous route through a region, players move between a hub and survey destinations, with field study and Pokédex completion tied to progression. The official gameplay overview explains the village, excursions, catching, and research loop.

  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Scarlet and Violet: a seamless region and flexible story order

Scarlet and Violet make the shift to an explicitly open-world region. Towns blend into the wilderness without borders, and Pokémon appear throughout the region. Players can weave among three main storylines—Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street—rather than follow just one fixed story sequence. Koraidon or Miraidon helps players traverse the terrain. Nintendo describes the games as an open world in its official overview; its 2022 announcement calls them a new evolutionary step for the main series.

Legends: Z-A: city exploration with defined wild zones

Legends: Z-A uses Lumiose City as its setting, with constructed wild zones where Pokémon live and can be caught. Players can throw a Poké Ball while exploring; some Pokémon flee, making approach and stealth relevant. Battle zones appear at night. This is another exploration format, not the same structure as traveling through a seamless region like Paldea. The official game site describes its city setting, wild zones, catching, and nighttime battle zones.

How the exploration designs compare

Game World continuity Route choice and access What exploration centers on
Sword and Shield A bounded Wild Area within a region connecting towns and cities. Roaming in the Wild Area sits within a more structured adventure. Free-camera exploration and encounters that vary by location and weather.
Legends: Arceus Distinct natural areas reached from Jubilife Village. Research rank opens access to more areas. Surveying, observing, catching, and completing research tasks.
Scarlet and Violet A seamless region where towns blend into wilderness. Players can pursue three main story paths in a flexible order. Traversing the region while choosing among story objectives.
Legends: Z-A Lumiose City organized around constructed wild zones. Exploration takes place in a city-based structure with wild and nighttime battle zones. Catching and battling in zones, with stealth and time-of-day systems.

What this evolution means for players

  • More open space does not necessarily mean one uninterrupted world. The Wild Area is a large destination within Galar; Legends: Arceus uses multiple survey areas; Scarlet and Violet connect towns and wilderness across a region.
  • Exploration became more closely tied to different forms of progression. The games contrast a structured adventure, research-rank area access, selectable story paths, and a city organized around specific zones.
  • Open-world design in Pokémon remains flexible. Legends: Z-A shows that the series can put exploration inside a city with defined wild zones rather than simply repeat Paldea’s regional layout.
