If a UPI payment failed after your account was debited, check the transaction in your app and your bank statement before paying again. NPCI says a failed debit should be refunded and advises contacting your bank if the money has not returned within one hour. A pending transfer is different: it may still complete, so first confirm its status and whether the recipient was credited.
First, identify what happened
The right next step depends on whether this was a transfer to another person or account, or a merchant payment, and on what the app says happened. Check whether your bank account was debited and whether the beneficiary received the money or the merchant received confirmation.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Failed or declined, with a debit | The payment did not complete as expected, but the money left your account. | Check for a reversal. NPCI says to contact your bank if it has not arrived within one hour. |
| Pending transfer | The transfer may have succeeded while the beneficiary bank is taking time to credit the recipient. | Do not immediately pay again. Check status and allow time for the beneficiary-bank settlement described by NPCI. |
| Merchant payment debited, but merchant says it received no confirmation | This has a separate RBI reversal timeline from a person-to-person transfer. | Ask the merchant to check its transaction records before retrying, then follow the merchant-payment timeline below if confirmation was not received. |
| Payment marked successful, but a purchase was returned or service rejected | This is a merchant refund request, not an automatic reversal for a failed transaction. | Contact the merchant about its refund process. |
NPCI’s UPI FAQ distinguishes a failed debit from a pending transfer. Its UPI Help guidance also notes that transaction history includes past and pending payments.
How to check your UPI payment status
- Open the UPI app you used and go to its transaction history. App menu names can vary.
- Select the payment in question and check the displayed status. Refresh or use the app’s current status-check option if available.
- Check your bank balance or statement to confirm whether the account was debited and whether a reversal has appeared.
- For a merchant payment, ask the merchant to verify its transaction records rather than relying only on a receipt or app notification.
Keep the transaction reference or RRN, date, amount, app status, and bank debit or credit record available for a support request. NPCI’s complaint facility asks for transaction details including date, transaction number/RRN, bank, account, and amount: NPCI UPI complaint facility.

What to do if the payment is failed or pending
Failed or declined after your account was debited
Look for the reversal in your account. NPCI says failed funds should be refunded and advises contacting your bank’s customer support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. This is immediate guidance; the applicable RBI reversal deadline depends on whether the payment was a transfer or a merchant payment.
Transfer still showing as pending
Record the reference and current status, then check again rather than sending a second payment while the first could still complete. NPCI’s FAQ says a pending transaction may mean the transfer succeeded but the beneficiary bank has delayed credit, and says the amount will reach the recipient within 48 hours once the bank completes daily settlements. Treat that as NPCI FAQ guidance, not a guarantee for every bank or case. If it remains unresolved, raise a transaction complaint in the app or contact your bank.

Merchant says it did not receive confirmation
Ask the merchant to check its transaction records before paying again. If the account was debited and the merchant location did not receive transaction confirmation, the RBI’s merchant-payment reversal timeline applies. If the original purchase was successful but you later returned the goods or rejected the service, ask the merchant for a refund instead; NPCI says the merchant requests that refund through its bank under the applicable process.
RBI reversal timelines and delay compensation
The Reserve Bank of India’s circular DPSS.CO.PD No.629/02.01.014/2019-20, dated September 20, 2019, sets different auto-reversal timelines for the two failure scenarios below. In the circular, T is the transaction date. Day counting in an individual case can depend on the applicable bank/RBI interpretation, so use the transaction date and confirm the due date with your bank.

| Scenario | RBI auto-reversal timeline | Delay compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Account debited for a UPI transfer, but beneficiary not credited | Beneficiary bank must auto-reverse if it cannot credit the beneficiary by T+1 day. | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 day. |
| Account debited for a merchant payment, but merchant location did not receive transaction confirmation | Auto-reversal within T+5 days. | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 days. |
RBI’s framework says compensation is to be credited to the account holder. These are scenario-specific regulatory timelines; NPCI’s 48-hour pending-transfer FAQ guidance is not a substitute for the RBI reversal deadline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to raise a complaint
- In your UPI app, open transaction history, select the relevant payment, and use the available complaint or help option. NPCI’s UPI Help guide says a complaint may be raised on debit transactions after five minutes; it excludes successful person-to-person transactions from the supported complaint types.
- To follow a complaint already submitted through the app, select the transaction associated with it and use the complaint-status option. NPCI says refreshing updates the current transaction status.
- If the app does not resolve the issue, contact your bank or use NPCI’s complaint facility. NPCI says the member bank or institution handles resolution. App labels and portal fields may change, so use the current options shown in the app or official channel.
- If the relevant RBI turnaround time has passed without redress, the RBI circular identifies the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021, as an escalation route.
For a suspected fraud or transaction you did not authorize, contact your bank directly and promptly; NPCI’s complaint portal directs these cases to the bank. Never share your UPI PIN with a caller or support representative. NPCI says the PIN authorizes transactions and bank customer support will never ask for it.
