You can meet someone through colleagues or a legitimate matchmaking service, but there is no universal government-run romantic dating program established here. Before participating, verify the specific program through the relevant government or employer website, read its privacy and contract terms, and check workplace policies—especially if either person supervises or evaluates the other. If there is no named, verifiable program, do not rely on a social-media post as proof that one exists.
First, identify what kind of introduction you are considering
“Through work” can mean meeting a colleague naturally, accepting an introduction from a coworker, attending an employer-sponsored event, or using a service connected to your employer. Those routes raise workplace-policy and power-dynamic questions. A government-run romantic dating program would be a separate, named scheme with its own operator, eligibility rules and privacy terms.
Do not confuse professional matchmaking with dating. For example, the UK government’s Horizon Europe matchmaking privacy notice concerns pairing organizations for research bids, not romantic introductions. Government sponsorship alone would not establish that a service is safe or suitable for you.
How to verify a government or employer program
Start with the relevant agency or employer’s official website, not a link in a social post, message or advertisement. In the official Singapore sources checked for this article, a current romantic dating pilot could not be verified. That is a limited finding, not proof that no such program exists. An official profile of two Singapore police officers who met through work-related encounters and later reconnected through a colleague is a personal story, not evidence of a formal program (Singapore Police Force profile, February 2026).

- Find the program on an official site. Navigate from the agency or employer’s home page or directory. If the listing is unclear, contact the organization using contact details published there rather than replying to the message that promoted the program.
- Confirm who operates it and who can join. Check the operator, eligibility, geographic reach, what introductions or communications are provided, and whether participation is genuinely optional.
- Read the privacy notice before submitting details. Look for the data collected, purpose, who can see or receive it, contractor access, retention period, withdrawal process and complaint route. Do not provide government login credentials, employee IDs, sensitive work information or intimate material to an unverified page.
- Check the full terms and costs. Establish whether fees apply to membership, introductions, matches or messages; whether subscriptions renew; and how cancellation and price or terms changes work.
A privacy notice for a real program should answer concrete questions, not just promise confidentiality. A UK notice for Horizon Europe matchmaking, for example, names the data controller, categories of data, purposes, recipients, retention and data rights. It is an organizational service, not a model dating scheme; its stated deletion date was 10 July 2026 and has passed, so it should not be treated as current program guidance.

How to meet a colleague without risking workplace boundaries
Rules depend on the employer and jurisdiction. Read the staff handbook and policies on relationships, conflicts of interest, disclosure, recusal, reporting lines and complaints before making a move. A direct supervisor, evaluator or other person with influence over the other’s job requires particular care. Both people must be able to decline freely, without pressure or a career consequence.
Check these points before acting
- Is either person in the other’s reporting, evaluation, hiring or promotion chain?
- Does policy require disclosure, reassignment or recusal from employment decisions?
- Is there a confidential HR, ethics or other appropriate channel for advice or a complaint?
- What boundaries apply at work, in work communications and if the relationship ends?
- Does policy permit using a work system or contact list for personal introductions? Do not use employer contact lists or work systems to pursue someone unless policy permits it and the person has welcomed the contact.
One agency-specific example is the U.S. Department of State’s 3 FAM 1510. It defines consensual relationships as willingly undertaken dating or sexual relationships and bars employees from directly supervising or evaluating someone they are dating. The policy addresses conflicts of interest, favoritism and potential sexual harassment; it is not a universal rule for government employees or private workplaces.

A separate U.S. example applies only to covered grant recipients and subrecipients. The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women requires covered awardees to have—or issue within 270 days of the award date—a policy addressing workplace-related sexual misconduct, domestic violence and dating violence. The condition includes allegations, workplace support for affected workers and certain adjudications relevant to sensitive roles; its definition can include events outside work that affect the workplace or grant-funded activity (OVW award condition, updated August 8, 2025). It does not apply to every employer.
How to assess a dating or matchmaking service
Before signing up, establish who runs the service, what it actually provides and what the complete contract costs. NSW Government consumer guidance explains that introduction agencies may offer matching for social or personal relationships, with free services or contracts charging for introductions, matches or communications. Its advice describes Australian consumer protections; legal rights and complaint routes differ elsewhere.

- Identify the business and its address, and confirm how to contact it.
- Understand what service you receive and what each introduction, match or communication costs.
- Read renewal, cancellation and price-change terms before entering payment details. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s online-dating business guidance covers data holding and sharing, renewals, cancellation and notice of changes; it was published in 2018 and notes UK consumer-law changes effective April 2025. For legal specifics, consult current consumer guidance for your location.
- Check what identity checks, moderation and reporting tools the service actually offers rather than assuming they are provided.
- Decide what personal details you are comfortable sharing and whether you can withdraw them or close the account.
Recognize scam and privacy warning signs
Stop and verify if a romantic contact asks for money, gifts, financial or identity information, secrecy, use of your bank account, compromising images, or a rapid move away from the service’s monitored channel. Do not send money to someone you have met online. A Singapore Home Team Journal article on online love scams describes how fraudsters exploit trust and emotional attachment; its April 2019 guidance recommends keeping early chats on a dating service’s monitored channel where possible, checking suspicious claims, keeping correspondence, consulting a trusted person and reporting suspicious profiles. These are practical precautions, not a current estimate of scam prevalence.
For a first in-person meeting, choose a public place, arrange your own transport and tell a trusted person where you will be and when you expect to check in. These are practical safety steps, not a universal official checklist. If you feel pressured or unsafe, leave and contact someone you trust.

What the available Singapore survey does—and does not—say
Singapore’s 2016 Marriage and Parenthood Survey found that more than 70% of singles who were or had been in serious relationships said they met their partner through friends, at school or at work. Among single respondents, 79% were comfortable meeting a partner through colleagues, compared with 86% through friends and 85% through recreational or social activities. The National Population and Talent Division surveyed 2,940 never-married and 2,861 married Singapore residents aged 21–45 from August through December 2016. These are historical survey findings, not current population estimates, proof that workplace dating is safe, or evidence of a government dating program.

Where to take a concern
For workplace pressure, a reporting-line conflict, harassment or policy uncertainty, keep relevant messages and records and contact the employer’s appropriate HR, ethics or reporting channel. For suspected fraud, misleading service terms or misuse of personal information, use the consumer-protection, privacy or police reporting route applicable where you live. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
