Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you receive an unexpected call, text, or message saying someone has died in hospital, take it seriously—but verify it independently before forwarding it, sending information, or taking other action. Find the hospital’s main number through its official website or paperwork you already know is genuine, then ask to be connected to the appropriate staff member.
How to check whether the notification is genuine
- Pause. Do not forward the message or act on requests for money, passwords, identity documents, or verification codes while the claim is unconfirmed.
- Find the hospital’s contact details independently. Use its official website or authentic paperwork—not only a number or link included in the unexpected message.
- Call the main number and ask for the right contact. Ask to be connected to the relevant ward, patient affairs, bereavement, or records contact. There is no single contact title or procedure that applies to every hospital.
- Explain what you received and ask what can be confirmed. Also ask what official next steps apply. The hospital may not be able to disclose details to every caller, depending on privacy rules and the circumstances.
- Keep a record. Save the message and note the caller’s claimed name, the time, the number used, and what they asked you to do. These details may help the hospital or local authorities assess a concern.
Do not treat the incoming number, a caller’s apparent familiarity with the situation, or a message’s professional tone as independent confirmation. Conversely, if the hospital cannot immediately confirm details, that alone does not establish that the notification is false.
What a hospital may be able to tell you
Rules depend on where the hospital is and on the circumstances. In the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services says the HIPAA Privacy Rule permits covered entities to notify or help notify family members, personal representatives, or other people responsible for a patient’s care about the patient’s location, general condition, or death in specified circumstances. If the patient can make the decision, disclosure generally depends on the patient’s agreement or lack of objection when practicable. If the patient cannot be consulted, professional judgment and the patient’s best interest may guide notification. This permission does not authenticate a particular call or message.
Those rules also mean a hospital’s inability or unwillingness to confirm information to you on the spot should not be taken as proof either way. Ask what it can confirm and which official contact or process you should use next.

What happens after confirmation depends on where the death occurred
United States
HIPAA’s notification permission concerns what a covered entity may disclose in specified circumstances; it is not a universal procedure for notifying relatives, certifying a death, or verifying an unsolicited message. Ask the hospital about its own official next steps and follow applicable local procedures.
England and Wales
Since 9 September 2024, deaths that are not investigated by a coroner are reviewed by NHS medical examiners. A doctor confirms the death before the medical examiner is contacted. The medical examiner scrutinises the cause of death and offers the deceased’s representative an opportunity to discuss it and raise concerns; the office contacts the representative to explain the cause and answer questions. GOV.UK says this process can take a few days, but that is process guidance, not a guaranteed timeline for every case.

Medical practitioners must report deaths to the coroner in specified circumstances, including suspected unnatural or violent death, an unknown cause, or death in custody or state detention. These arrangements apply to England and Wales; other countries have their own medical, civil-registration, and coroner or medical-examiner procedures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If details conflict or the request seems suspicious
Call the hospital using independently found official contact details and explain the discrepancy. Do not send money, credentials, identity documents, or codes to the requester unless you have independently confirmed who they are and why the information is needed. If the circumstances remain suspicious, seek advice from the appropriate local police, coroner, or other official authority. The precautions here are sensible verification steps; they are not evidence that a particular death-notification scam is occurring.
