How to clean over-ear headphones safely
- Check the model’s instructions. Turn the headphones off if applicable. Look up the official manual or support page before using moisture or removing pads; Sennheiser specifically advises checking product documentation for special instructions (Sennheiser cleaning guidance).
- Remove loose dust and oil. Gently wipe accessible surfaces with a soft, clean, dry cloth. Apple’s Beats guidance calls for a dry cleaning cloth on ear cups and ear-cup mesh (Apple Support).
- Clean only surfaces that the model’s instructions permit. If the manual allows moisture, use the specified method and keep the cloth barely damp rather than wet. Do not assume that a cleaner suitable for one surface or brand is suitable for another.
- Keep openings and sensitive areas dry. Do not wet the inner screen, ear-cup mesh, charging port, buttons, or other openings. Do not pour water over, rinse, or soak the headphones. Sony warns that moisture entering the housing can cause malfunction or electric shock (Sony support).
- Dry before use or charging. Wipe away sweat and any permitted cleaning moisture, then leave the headphones to dry fully at room temperature. Sony warns that charging while moisture remains can cause malfunctions (Sony support).
Choose a cleaner by brand and surface
There is no universally safe headphone-cleaning liquid. Instructions differ even on whether a damp cloth is appropriate, so follow the guidance for your exact model and material rather than transferring another brand’s method.

How to clean cushions, mesh, and the headband
Ear-cup mesh and inner screens
Use a dry cloth where the manufacturer specifies one, and do not push a brush, tweezers, or other tool into the mesh or housing. Bose says to keep the inner screen dry; Apple says to use a dry cleaning cloth on ear-cup mesh. If debris is lodged behind a screen, consult the manufacturer rather than trying to reach inside.
Cushions and headband
Clean cushions and headband materials only with the method approved for that model. Some guidance allows a lightly damp or soapy cloth on certain cushions, while other guidance recommends dry wiping. Leather, synthetic coverings, and exposed plastic may have different rules. Do not remove a cushion unless the instructions for your model explain how to do so.

Buttons, sliders, and accessible edges
A soft-bristled brush can help lift residue from accessible edges or around controls when the manufacturer permits it. Keep the brush outside openings; do not force debris inward or insert tools into ports.
How often to clean headphones
Bose recommends wiping headphones at least once a week, especially after workouts (Bose cleaning guide). That is Bose’s recommendation, not a universal schedule established for every brand and model. Wipe away sweat after use and clean more often when the headphones become visibly dirty, following their care instructions.

Drying, charging, and storage
After exercise or cleaning, remove surface moisture and let the headphones dry fully at room temperature before charging. Store them in their supplied protective case, or in another clean, dry place. Apple advises keeping Beats away from direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold (Apple Support). Sennheiser says a silica-gel packet may be placed in a case or pouch to absorb extra moisture (Sennheiser earpad care).
When and how to replace ear cushions
Consider replacement when persistent soiling or wear remains, comfort declines, or the manufacturer says the pads need replacing. Worn cushions can affect comfort and acoustic seal; Bose describes replacement for the products covered by its guide (Bose). Sennheiser describes earpads as replaceable for hygiene and says spare pads are available through a Sennheiser partner (Sennheiser).

Buy pads listed for the exact headphone model, and follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions. If the design uses scrims or retaining rings, reinstall them as directed; do not force a cushion that does not fit.
