Sometimes—but OpenWrt does not work on every router, and support can differ between hardware revisions of the same model. Check the exact model and revision in OpenWrt’s device database before downloading anything. You also need the matching first-install image and procedure; choosing firmware by brand or model family alone can damage the device.

How to check whether your router is compatible

  1. Identify the exact unit. Read the full model name and hardware revision from the router’s label or its administration interface. Do not assume a support entry for one revision applies to another.
  2. Find that exact entry. Search the OpenWrt Supported Devices database and consult its linked device page. Check the supported release, installation method, required image, unsupported functions—especially wireless features—and any revision or bootloader caveats. The OpenWrt Table of Hardware can help you search and filter devices, but use the device-specific instructions to make the final decision.
  3. Check usable hardware resources. OpenWrt lists 8 MB flash and 64 MB RAM as bare minimum figures, and 16 MB flash and 128 MB RAM as better. These are general guidance, not a guarantee that a particular router or feature set will work. OpenWrt explicitly warns against devices with 8 MB flash and 64 MB RAM for an up-to-date, secure installation. Total flash-chip capacity can also overstate the space available for OpenWrt, particularly on devices with dual firmware.
  4. Confirm that an install path is documented. A device being listed does not mean that installation is straightforward or that every function works. Read all device-page notes before deciding whether to proceed.

What to know before flashing

Factory install and sysupgrade are different

A factory install replaces the router’s vendor firmware with OpenWrt. It uses the device’s first-install method and the image specified for that exact device. A sysupgrade is for a router already running OpenWrt; its image and process are not interchangeable with a factory install. Use the OpenWrt Firmware Selector together with the device page rather than guessing from a filename.

The wrong image can brick the router

OpenWrt’s factory-install guide advises matching the firmware to the exact device and checking its checksum before flashing. If your calculated checksum differs from the published one, stop: a corrupt image can brick the device. Connect over Ethernet during installation where the device and procedure allow it, and save configurations or other information you may need.

Recovery is device-specific

Installation steps and recovery options vary by router. Some devices have version-sensitive bootloader requirements; OpenWrt’s MikroTik common-procedure notes illustrate why instructions for one brand or model should not be generalized to another. Do not count on being able to restore vendor firmware unless the instructions for your exact device document that option.

A pre-installation stop/go checklist

  • Proceed only if the exact model and revision are identified, the device entry supports them, and you understand the documented first-install method and image.
  • Stop if you are unsure of the revision, cannot confirm image compatibility, or find a checksum mismatch.
  • Before starting, read every device-specific warning, download firmware from the official source, verify its checksum, save relevant configuration information, and use a wired Ethernet connection where possible.
  • Plan for support limitations: confirm any unsupported features, including radio or wireless functions, before relying on the router for them.

If OpenWrt is not a safe fit

If the router is unsupported, has inadequate resources for your needs, or lacks a documented installation path you are comfortable following, keeping its stock firmware is a sensible option. You could instead use a separately supported OpenWrt router as your router or access point; verify that device’s exact hardware entry before buying or installing.

What to expect from future OpenWrt upgrades

On a router already running OpenWrt, sysupgrade replaces the installation and restores only configuration files specified for preservation. OpenWrt’s sysupgrade guide advises backing up custom files and planning to reinstall packages you added manually. This describes OpenWrt upgrades; it does not establish the rollback process for every move from vendor firmware to OpenWrt.
