Choose the earbud tip that feels comfortably snug, seals your ear canal, and stays in place without pressure or pain. Test each ear separately: your left and right ears may need different sizes. A good seal can improve sound and noise-canceling performance, but fit depends on the earbud model and the way you wear it.
What a secure, well-sealed fit should feel like
The tip should rest comfortably at the opening of your ear canal and form a seal without feeling forced. Bose describes its intended fit this way for supported earbuds: the tip “gently rests at the opening of your ear canal to create a comfortable seal.” Bose’s fit guidance is model-specific, but comfort and a stable seal are useful checks across in-ear headphones.
- Too much pressure or pain: the tip may be too large or positioned poorly. Try another size or adjust the earbud rather than forcing it into place.
- Loose, slipping, or too deeply seated: the tip may not be sealing properly. Try a different size and check that the earbud is seated as its maker instructs.
- Secure and comfortable: gently move your head. The earbud should stay in place without building pressure.
A poor seal or incorrect wearing position can affect sound quality and noise cancellation, according to Sony’s guide for the WF-1000XM6. Regular earbud tips are not, on that basis, certified hearing protection.
How to find the right size
- Start with the tips supplied with your earbuds. Follow the instructions for your model. There is no universal starting size: Sony advises trying sizes from larger to smaller for the WF-1000XM6, while beyerdynamic’s general fitting guidance says to start with the smallest and increase if it does not seal or feels insecure. Use comfort and retention to decide, not either starting method as a rule for every earbud.
- Fit one ear at a time. Try a size in one ear, then assess its comfort and seal before moving to the other. Repeat independently for the other ear; the best size may differ between ears.
- Check the seal and stability. Wear the earbud as directed, then move your head gently. If it slips, feels loose, or creates pressure, try another size or reposition it.
- Use a fit or seal test if your earbuds offer one. Apple and Bose provide model-supported ways to check fit or seal. Treat the result as an additional, device-specific check—not a guarantee that the tip will be comfortable in every situation. See Apple’s fit guidance or Bose’s instructions for supported models.

The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a material that works best for everyone. Compare tips by the way they fit you and by whether they are designed for your specific earbuds.

beyerdynamic’s instructions and Comply’s fitting guidance describe compressing or rolling foam tips and holding them while they expand. Make sure a replacement tip is securely attached before wearing it.

If none of the supplied sizes creates a comfortable, stable seal, look for replacement tips explicitly listed as compatible with your exact earbud model. Do not assume that a tip will fit because it looks similar or shares a size label: attachment and nozzle compatibility matter. Apple distinguishes tip generations in its compatibility guidance, and Comply directs customers to products for compatible earbuds.
