The right distraction-free text editor depends on what interrupts your writing: a crowded interface, or the work of managing a large manuscript. For short essays and focused drafts, a restrained editor with portable files may be enough. For a novel, thesis, or screenplay, chapter organization, research storage, revision tools, and compilation can matter more than an entirely blank screen. Compare those needs with your devices, preferred file format, sync workflow, and licensing model before choosing.
Start with the kind of writing project you have
A simple editor is often the better choice when you write one document at a time and can keep drafts in ordinary files and folders. It avoids adding project controls you may not use.
A long manuscript can create different problems: rearranging scenes, keeping notes near the prose, finding material across a project, and assembling a finished document. A project-oriented editor may help with those tasks, but its extra structure is useful only if it solves a real problem in your workflow.
- Choose a minimal editor if the main obstacle is interface clutter and your drafts are easy to manage as individual files.
- Consider a manuscript-focused editor if you need to organize chapters or scenes, hold research with the draft, track revisions, or compile sections into a finished format.
Decide what “distraction-free” should mean for you
Minimal interfaces do not all behave the same way. Some hide most controls in full-screen mode; others dim everything except the active line or paragraph. Typewriter scrolling keeps the current line in a consistent position, while a composition mode can conceal project panels until you need them.

Consider whether you want to see word counts, goals, and navigation while drafting, or only when you ask for them. A focus effect that feels calming during a first draft may become irritating when you are moving through text to revise. Try the editor’s focus behavior on both kinds of work rather than judging it from a feature list.
For example, WIRED describes iA Writer’s active-line focus and Scrivener’s composition mode, while its review of FocusWriter highlights a customizable interface. Those options illustrate different approaches, not a universal ranking. WIRED’s comparison of distraction-free writing apps

Match the editor to your file and export needs
Markdown and plain text make formatting cues visible alongside the words and can make drafts easier to move between tools. Rich text offers more conventional formatting without Markdown markers. Neither is automatically better: choose based on whether you value portable, text-centered drafts or familiar formatted documents.
Before committing, check the editor’s native file format and how it exports the document types you actually need. iA Writer says it supports copying text as HTML and exporting to PDF or Word. Scrivener’s Compile feature offers multiple output formats, including Word, PDF, EPUB, and Final Draft. These are product-published capabilities; confirm that the current version supports your intended workflow.

Compare the main editor options by fit
| Editor | Potential fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| iA Writer | Focused Markdown drafting and straightforward exports may suit writers who do not need deep manuscript management. | Supported devices, platform-specific price, and current trial terms. Its official page advertises a free seven-day trial. |
| Scrivener | Long, complex projects that benefit from sections, notes and research, outlining or corkboard views, snapshots, targets, and compilation. | Current platform requirements, sync workflow, export behavior, and regional price. The publisher lists macOS, Windows, and iOS versions. |
| Ulysses | A candidate for writers who want focus and typewriter modes, goal tracking, proofreading, and export styles in an Apple-centered workflow. | Current device availability and subscription terms; comparative reporting describes it as Apple-only. |
| FocusWriter | A customizable, sparse desktop environment for writers who prefer RTF-oriented work over Markdown. | Current platform support and sync options. WIRED describes it as free and open source and notes features such as spelling, tabs, statistics, and goals. |
| Google Docs | A familiar word processor when collaboration matters more than dedicated long-form project organization. | Whether its current collaboration and offline behavior meet your needs. WIRED describes a full-screen mode that hides most interface elements and calls it free. |
| Obsidian | A possible fit if you already use a linked-note system and want to draft in Markdown. | How much setup and how many extensions your writing workflow requires; added configuration can become another source of distraction. |
| Calmly Writer or OmmWriter | Niche alternatives: WIRED describes Calmly Writer as a simple Markdown editor with basic statistics and OmmWriter as an immersive environment with sound and typing effects. | Current availability, platform support, and pricing before relying on either. |
Check devices, sync, and licensing before moving a project
List every device you expect to write on, then verify that the editor supports each one. Platform availability and sync terms can change. Scrivener’s publisher lists macOS, Windows, and iOS editions and says Dropbox is used for cross-platform sync. WIRED’s comparison describes FocusWriter as lacking mobile sync in the version it reviewed; treat that as a version-specific report, not a guarantee about current releases.

Also distinguish a one-time license from a subscription, and check whether each platform requires a separate purchase. At the time its page was accessed on October 4, 2026, Literature & Latte displayed Scrivener at US$59.99 for a standard macOS or Windows license, US$23.99 for iOS, and US$95.98 for a macOS/Windows bundle. These are volatile listed prices, not guaranteed current or regional prices. Scrivener product information and pricing
WIRED describes Ulysses as subscription-based and FocusWriter as free and open source, but verify present terms directly before deciding. For any shortlisted editor, include sync costs and platform-specific licenses in the total cost rather than comparing only the initial price.

A short test using your own writing reveals more than a feature checklist. Use a chapter or substantial essay, and try both drafting and revision.
- Set up the project you actually need. In a minimal editor, create a draft and save it where you expect to keep your writing. In a project editor, create a small project with sections and a research note.
- Draft with the focus tools enabled. Try full-screen or composition mode, focus highlighting, and typewriter scrolling if available. Notice whether controls are easy to reach without pulling your attention away.
- Revise and navigate. Move between sections, search for a passage, and check whether the interface helps or slows you when editing existing prose.
- Export and reopen the result. Confirm that the file opens in your intended destination and that important formatting survived.
- Check the real device workflow. Open or sync the project on each device you plan to use, and confirm that licensing and sync arrangements work for you.
Make the choice based on friction, not feature count
For Markdown-first focused drafting, iA Writer is a plausible candidate. For a complex manuscript that needs section management and compilation, Scrivener is worth considering. Ulysses may suit an Apple-centered workflow; FocusWriter may suit writers who want a customizable, sparse desktop editor; Google Docs favors familiar collaboration. Obsidian is more compelling when linked notes are already part of your process, while Calmly Writer and OmmWriter are alternatives to check for current availability and terms.
These are fit-based options, not a claim that one editor is best for everyone. Even Scrivener’s publisher-hosted testimonial from novelist and screenwriter Neil Cross—“Scrivener is damn near perfect as a writer’s application”—is a customer endorsement, not an independent comparative verdict.
