Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild the project around individually movable scenes: keep each scene’s immediate notes and summary with its draft, and store reusable character and setting details in separate reference files. Cheese Paper’s files are Markdown with TOML metadata, so you can also work with them outside the app. It runs offline; syncing across computers is something you arrange separately.
Start with scenes, not chapters
Cheese Paper is organized around scenes, which the developer describes as its core writing unit. Create a separate scene for each manageable narrative unit, then move scenes independently as the structure changes. There is no universal scene length specified by the documentation, so choose a division that makes sense for your project and workflow.
Each scene can have a notes area and a summary alongside its draft. That lets you plan before writing, capture reminders during drafting, and record what happened afterward for a wider view of the story. The app supports those functions; how you use them is a workflow choice.
Keep the right information in the right place
Use scene notes for immediate context
Put reminders that matter to a particular scene in its notes: intended developments, details to check for continuity, or questions to resolve. After drafting, write a brief summary of the scene’s essential outcome. A concise summary can help you review the sequence of events without rereading every draft.

Use character and worldbuilding files for reusable facts
Keep recurring character details in character files and information about places, organizations, systems, or other setting elements in worldbuilding files. Refer to relevant material from a scene’s notes in your own words. The documentation describes these records but does not claim that the app automatically links scene notes to reference entries.
Reorder scenes as the project changes
Because scenes can be moved independently, you can change their order as the outline develops without treating the original sequence as permanent. Cheese Paper’s documentation does not prescribe an outlining method or a fixed act structure; use the scene order that fits your project.

Understand the files and plan syncing
Cheese Paper stores prose as Markdown, with notes and other information in TOML headers. The developer says the app processes files that are created, edited, moved, or deleted externally, so the project is not limited to editing inside Cheese Paper. Keep a backup as a separate precaution; the project documentation’s mention of backups is not a specific backup guarantee.
The app runs offline. To use the same project on more than one computer, arrange file syncing separately. The developer lists Syncthing, Nextcloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox as examples, without endorsing one. Choose a setup that suits your devices and backup practices, and make sure you understand how it handles simultaneous edits before relying on it.

Choose the export for the job
| Export | What it gathers | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Outline | Notes, summaries, and other supporting information | Sharing or reviewing planning material |
| Story | Included scenes combined into Markdown | Compiling a manuscript for further formatting or conversion |
The developer says the story export’s Markdown can be converted to formats such as EPUB, DOCX, HTML, and PDF, and names Pandoc as a personal favorite. Check the exported file and any converted version before distribution; the documentation does not promise that every conversion will preserve all layout details.
Decide whether Cheese Paper fits your workflow
