Before handing in an iPhone for repair or moving to a replacement, make a fresh backup and verify that it finished. You can back up to iCloud, to a Mac or Windows computer, or use both as separate backup options. Check which data syncs to iCloud separately, and make an encrypted computer backup if you need Health, Activity, or Keychain data in that copy.
Choose where to keep your backup
Apple supports iCloud and computer backups, and says you can use both as alternative methods. A second copy can help if the first one is unavailable or cannot be restored.

Before you start: check the backup and sync status
- Check the most recent backup. Do not rely on an old automatic backup if you are about to send the phone away. Make a fresh one before the appointment and confirm its completion.
- Check iCloud syncing. iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and Messages in iCloud sync separately from iCloud Backup. If enabled, their content is not duplicated in the device backup. Give syncing time and confirm the relevant service is on. If a service is off, some content may instead be included in the device backup, as applicable.
- Decide whether you need an encrypted local copy. If Health, Activity, or Keychain data must be in a computer backup, enable encryption and keep the password somewhere secure.
- Allow enough time and space. Keep the iPhone on power and Wi-Fi for an iCloud backup. For a computer backup, make sure the computer has enough available storage.

Back up to iCloud on the iPhone
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and power.
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Run a backup from that screen. Leave the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while it completes.
- Return to the iCloud Backup screen and check the latest backup information to verify that a current backup completed before service.
Apple’s full iPhone backup instructions are at How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Automatic iCloud backups happen when the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi, so a manual check is prudent before a repair or replacement.
Back up to a Mac or Windows computer
A computer backup is a local copy. Use a cable that supports data transfer and fits the iPhone and computer; a charging-only cable may not work for this task.

- Connect the iPhone to the computer and unlock it if prompted. If asked whether to trust the computer, follow the prompt.
- On a Mac with macOS 10.15 or later, open Finder and select the iPhone. On earlier macOS versions, use iTunes. On Windows, use Apple Devices or iTunes, as applicable.
- Choose the option to back up the iPhone to the computer and start the backup.
- If the backup must contain Health, Activity, or Keychain data, select Encrypt local backup, create a password, and store it securely. Apple requires that password when restoring the encrypted backup.
- Wait for the backup to finish, then check the computer app’s backup details or latest-backup information before disconnecting the phone.
Computer backups contain almost all device data and settings, but they exclude content already synced to iCloud, Apple Pay and Face ID or Touch ID settings, and some media synced from a store or computer. See Apple’s backup-method guidance for the distinctions. You do not need to buy a cable if you already have a compatible data cable.
Restore the backup after repair or on a replacement iPhone
Follow the iPhone setup process until you reach the screen for transferring apps and data, then choose the intended iCloud or Mac/PC backup. Check the backup date and size before selecting it. For iCloud, keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power while content downloads. For an encrypted computer backup, enter the password you set when making it.

Apple says a device returned from an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider may need to be restored. Avoid setting it up as new if you intend to restore a saved copy. If you set it up as new and later want an earlier iCloud backup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone before restoring. Apple also warns that a new iCloud backup made after setting up as new can overwrite the earlier backup you meant to use. - Update macOS or Windows and the backup app you use, then reconnect the iPhone with the cable.
- Check whether the iPhone appears in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, and follow any prompts on the phone or computer.
- Restart both devices and try again.
- If an alert reports insufficient space, free storage on the computer before retrying.
- If the backup is corrupted or incompatible, try a different backup. You can also use another computer or make an iCloud backup instead.
