Often, yes—but it depends on the watch. A discontinued smartwatch may still show the time, run on-watch features, or record data locally even when its companion app has changed or disappeared. Functions that rely on a phone, account, app download, or the maker’s servers may no longer work. Identify the exact model, protect any data you can access, then test the watch before resetting it or changing phones.
What can still work when the app is gone?
Discontinued hardware and discontinued online services are different. A watch may continue to perform functions on the device even if its maker has ended an app or service; conversely, a working watch may lose features that depend on a phone connection or vendor servers.
Pebble Support said in its December 7, 2016 shutdown notice that “Active Pebble watches in the wild will continue to work,” while warning that functionality or service quality could decline over time. That historical statement is about Pebble, not a guarantee for every discontinued watch. Pebble’s archived shutdown notice recommended the latest firmware and mobile app available at the time.
Try the watch itself before concluding it is unusable: check the display, menus, alarms, and whether it can record and show a short activity without a phone. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a promise that every model supports those functions.

How to check what your watch still does
- Write down its identity. Note the brand, exact model or generation, displayed firmware version, and the phone’s operating system. Describe the specific problem—such as charging, pairing, notifications, activity recording, or account login—rather than treating every failure as an app problem.
- Check local functions. Charge the watch, disconnect Bluetooth, and try its basic on-watch features. If it records an activity, see whether you can view it on the watch before reconnecting.
- Check data access before changing anything. Look up the manufacturer’s instructions for exporting or copying data. Garmin, for example, says data recorded by its watches, wellness data, and user data are stored on the device in standard
.FITfiles accessible via a computer. This Garmin-specific guidance does not establish that other brands store data the same way, and Garmin does not guarantee third-party app compatibility. Garmin’s offline-use guidance also says it has no standalone offline mobile app with the full Garmin Connect feature set. - Check the current official support route. Find out whether the app can still be downloaded, whether pairing is supported on your phone’s current operating system, and whether setup requires an account or online service. Garmin identifies Garmin Express and Garmin Connect as update routes for supported wearables; that does not establish legacy support for every Garmin model. Garmin’s wearable update guidance is model- and support-dependent.
Back up before resetting or switching phones
Do not make a factory reset your first troubleshooting step. A reset can erase settings, totals, or setup information that may be difficult or impossible to restore if the required app or service is unavailable. Garmin warns that resetting can erase device totals and settings, and that its backup and restore instructions apply only to some devices. Check the instructions for your exact model and copy any accessible data before proceeding. Garmin’s backup and restore guidance explains its device-specific limits.
A computer connection may not appear as a normal drive on every computer. Garmin notes that devices using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) do not appear as a drive on Mac and recommends Windows for those devices. Verify the connection method for your watch before assuming it has no accessible files.

Pair an old watch to a new phone carefully
Pairing depends on the watch model, app, and phone platform. First check the maker’s current instructions for that exact combination; do not apply one brand’s pairing remedy to another.
For Pebble users on Android, Pebble’s support guide recommends disconnecting and reconnecting through the Pebble app if pairing gets stuck in a connection negotiation loop. It also advises clearing old pairings before pairing again, and allowing background startup on some Xiaomi phones when notifications are unreliable. Follow those steps only for the relevant Pebble and Android setup. Pebble’s Android connection guide has the model-specific instructions.

When a replacement cable helps—and when it does not
A replacement charging cable may solve a missing or worn-out cable, but it cannot fix a failed battery or restore an unavailable app, account, or server. Pebble’s archived support page lists cable options by watch series; match the exact model and connector, and confirm compatibility with the seller because the archived guidance does not establish current stock. The Pebble support notice includes its series-linked accessory references.

Decide based on the functions you actually need, not just whether the watch can still connect. If its reliable standalone features are enough, it may remain useful without its original app. If a must-have feature depends on an unavailable download, account, server, or security update, replacement may be the more practical choice. Lack of current support alone does not prove that every watch is unsafe or unusable.

When comparing alternatives, check these points for each exact model:
- Which functions work directly on the watch?
- Does existing phone pairing work with your phone and operating-system version?
- Can you access, export, and back up local data?
- Does setup or everyday use depend on an account, cloud service, or app download?
- Is the watch still receiving updates or security support?
- Are compatible batteries, chargers, bands, or other parts available and an exact fit?
There is no universal answer for every discontinued brand or model. The examples above establish specific Garmin and Pebble behavior only; check the exact manufacturer’s current support information before relying on a feature or troubleshooting step.
