Robotaxis use exterior sensors to perceive roads and traffic; some services also use cabin cameras or microphones for support, safety, or vehicle-readiness checks. A sensor detecting something does not necessarily mean a recording is saved or sent to the operator. The details depend on the company, the sensor, the purpose, and what triggers collection, so check the privacy notice for the specific service and market.
What sensors do robotaxis use?
There is no single sensor setup shared by every robotaxi. Cameras provide visual information about traffic lights, road users, and construction zones. Waymo says its cameras provide a 360-degree field of view and lists lidar and radar as additional parts of the Waymo Driver. Zoox describes a 360-degree view from cameras, lidar, radar, and long-wave infrared sensors. These are each company’s descriptions of its own system, not specifications for all robotaxis. Waymo’s cameras, microphones, and related data FAQ Zoox’s sensor overview Waymo Driver overview
Multiple sensor types can collect information at the same time. Uber’s road-data notice, for example, describes outward-facing research collection that combines camera, lidar, and radar data with location and time information. That notice covers public-road research vehicles and distinguishes this activity from information collected when a customer requests or receives a ride through Uber’s apps. What can exterior cameras capture?
Exterior cameras observe the roadway and surrounding driving environment. Their footage may include traffic signals, vehicles, pedestrians, road works, and other events relevant to navigation. People or license plates can also appear incidentally in that footage. Uber says its research-road recordings are used to train and validate AI-based perception systems and improve autonomous driving. Waymo describes exterior cameras as supporting mapping, safe service delivery, and technology improvement. Uber Road Data Collection Privacy Hub Waymo’s August 24, 2026 privacy post

What are cabin cameras used for?
Cabin cameras have different purposes from exterior driving sensors, and practices vary by operator. Waymo lists cleanliness checks, finding lost property, emergency assistance, checking in-car rules, service improvement, and safety and security. Its support team may review video in certain circumstances, such as after a reported issue, and may occasionally access live video in urgent situations. Waymo’s cameras, microphones, and related data FAQ
Tesla’s Robotaxi notice describes different conditions: cabin camera data is not sent during an active ride except in specified situations such as support, occupancy detection, or a safety event. The notice also describes rider opt-in and an on-screen indicator when the camera is active. After a ride, Tesla says the camera may check whether the vehicle is ready for its next trip, including for cleanliness or left-behind items. The notice distinguishes ordinary rides from limited early-access practices. Tesla Robotaxi privacy notice Tesla privacy information

Do robotaxis record conversations?
Microphones and sound-detection systems may serve different functions, and sound detection does not by itself establish that ordinary cabin conversation is continuously recorded and uploaded.
Waymo
Waymo says cabin microphones are on during calls with Rider Support or when a rider actively enables them. Separately, it says its vehicles use audio detection to identify police and emergency sirens, with technical and procedural safeguards intended to limit collection of human voice data. Waymo also states on its help page that it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals. Waymo’s cameras, microphones, and related data FAQ

Tesla
Tesla says its vehicle can detect road sounds such as nearby sirens so it can yield to emergency vehicles. According to its notice, siren detection is processed locally and is not saved or transmitted to Tesla unless a rider opts in to share sound-detection data. The same notice says account-associated audio is transmitted when a support request is initiated or a safety event occurs, and describes an indicator when the microphone is in use. These are Tesla-specific statements, not rules that apply to every robotaxi. Tesla Robotaxi privacy notice
How operators use, share, and retain sensor data
Depending on the service and collection context, operators describe using sensor data for driving, perception-system development, support, safety, or technology improvement. Sharing and retention rules also differ. Uber says it shares road video with selected autonomous-driving partners for research and development, and describes encryption, restricted internal access, and retention only as long as necessary for stated purposes. Its notice also describes possible disclosures in legal and safety-related circumstances. Because this is a road-research notice, it should not be read as a complete account of data collected during every ride through Uber’s apps. Uber road-data privacy notice
