Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you can’t receive Amazon’s two-step verification (2SV) code, first try a registered backup method or a trusted device. If no available option works, use the sign-in prompt’s Didn’t Receive the Code link and choose Two-Step Verification Account Recovery to verify your identity. Amazon’s recovery page says it can’t change 2SV settings until identity is verified.
Try these fixes in order
- Try a backup method or trusted device. At the 2SV prompt, choose another available method if the option appears. Amazon’s recovery flow may also offer a passkey or sign-in with a code; available choices vary by account and sign-in flow. See Amazon’s account recovery instructions.
- Check your phone and message delivery. Confirm that the displayed number is one you still control, check for cellular or Wi-Fi signal, and ask your carrier whether it blocks short-code or verification messages. These are among the checks in Amazon’s OTP troubleshooting guidance.
- Request a code through another offered route. At the prompt, select Didn’t Receive the Code and try another registered number or method if Amazon offers one. Amazon’s general sign-in help describes resending by SMS and WhatsApp delivery linked to the registered phone number, but WhatsApp may not appear for every 2SV challenge. See Amazon’s sign-in help.
- For a rejected code, use the latest one promptly. Amazon’s OTP guidance says to enter a received code within 10 minutes and use the newest code if several arrive. If an authenticator code is rejected, wait for it to expire and enter the next one.
- Use an authenticator only if it was already enrolled. Authenticator apps generate codes locally, so they do not need cell signal. Amazon gives Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as examples. Installing an app after you’re locked out does not enroll it with Amazon; setup normally requires access to Your Account → Login & security.
When to use Amazon account recovery
If you cannot sign in with any available method, enter the email address or phone number associated with your account and proceed to the 2SV prompt. Select Didn’t Receive the Code, then Two-Step Verification Account Recovery, and follow the on-screen identity-verification instructions. Amazon’s recovery page does not specify a review timeframe or a universal list of documents, so follow the instructions shown for your account rather than relying on a promised timeline or anecdotal document list.
Choose the path that matches what you can access
| Path | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Another registered method or trusted device | You still have a backup number, an enrolled authenticator, or access to a trusted device or passkey offered at sign-in. | Use a method already available to your account; a newly installed app or newly acquired phone number won’t immediately function as an enrolled method. |
| Two-Step Verification Account Recovery | No available sign-in method gets you through the 2SV prompt. | Amazon requires identity verification before changing 2SV settings. The current customer recovery page does not state how long review takes or exactly what evidence every customer must provide. |
After you regain access
- Open Your Account → Login & security.
- Review the 2SV methods attached to your account and replace any phone number or method you can no longer access.
- Add a backup method while signed in, so a single unavailable phone or delivery route is less likely to lock you out again.
Amazon describes 2SV as requiring a code in addition to your password, with text message and authenticator app among the options in its overview of Two-Step Verification. This guidance reflects Amazon’s US English help flow accessed October 4, 2026; button names and available routes can differ by region, account, or interface version.
