To use a custom skin in VLC, download a .vlt skin, place it in VLC’s skins folder, switch the interface to skins mode, and restart VLC. These steps apply to Windows and Linux/Unix; VideoLAN says skins do not work on Mac OS X.
Check whether VLC skins work on your platform
VideoLAN’s VLC skins page says, “Skins do not work on Mac OS X!” It does not provide a Mac workaround. The installation steps below are for Windows and Linux/Unix, the platforms for which that page gives locations.
Download a skin and put it in VLC’s skins folder

Download a skin from VideoLAN’s official VLC skins page. The page offers individual skins and a pack of skins, which it describes as updated daily. Choose a package from a source you trust.

Place the downloaded skin file in the location for your system:

skinsfolder inside the VLC installation directory. VideoLAN givesC:Program FilesVideoLANVLCskinsas an example; the installation directory can differ on your computer. - Linux/Unix: put it in
~/.local/share/vlc/skins2.
VLC skin packages commonly use the .vlt extension. VideoLAN’s older skin-creation guide explains that a skin consists of image resources and an XML file describing its layout and behavior. You do not need to edit XML to install an existing skin.
Switch VLC to skins mode

Open VLC’s settings or preferences and change the interface from Native to Skins. The exact settings labels and navigation can vary by VLC version.

Restart VLC. VideoLAN says a restart is required to change to skins mode.

After VLC reopens, right-click the skinned interface and select Interface > Choose Skin to select the skin you want.

You can also choose a skin in VLC’s settings. The right-click menu is available once VLC is already using the skins interface.
If the skin does not appear
- Confirm the file location. Check that the skin is in the Windows installation’s
skinsfolder or the Linux/Unix~/.local/share/vlc/skins2directory, as applicable. - Restart after changing the interface. VLC needs to restart to enter skins mode.
- Check the platform. VideoLAN says skins do not work on Mac OS X, and its page gives no workaround.
- Account for packaging differences. VideoLAN’s page does not specify separate paths for every Linux distribution or packaging method, so a package installed by a distribution may use a different location.
Making your own VLC skin
If you want to create rather than install a skin, VideoLAN’s creation guide covers the format, including its image resources and XML structure. VideoLAN also describes a WYSIWYG VLC Skin Editor; its project page lists Java Runtime Environment 6 or later as a requirement. That is the requirement stated on the page, not confirmation that the editor is maintained or compatible with current Java releases.
