If a long Ethernet connection keeps dropping, first measure the entire cable path, then test with a short, known-good cable and a different port. These checks help determine whether the problem is the run, its connectors, or the network equipment. Standard twisted-pair copper Ethernet is designed for a channel of up to 100 meters; a cable’s category label alone does not guarantee a stable link.
1. Measure the full cable path
Measure the cable route itself—not the straight-line distance between rooms. Count patch cords at both ends, wall cabling, patch panels, and couplers. Intel’s Ethernet cabling guidance says the cable between a computer and switch must be less than 100 meters (Intel, Ethernet Cabling Specifications, last reviewed December 10, 2021). Cisco describes 100 meters as the ordinary maximum and notes that the result depends on cable construction and channel assumptions, including solid horizontal cable and stranded patch cords (Cisco Ethernet troubleshooting guidance).
Treat 100 meters as a channel design limit, not a guarantee that any cable will work reliably at that length. Excessive flexible patch cable, extra connection points, poor terminations, or damaged conductors can undermine a run that appears to be within the limit. Check the cabling and equipment specifications for your installation.
Intel’s documentation calls for Cat 5 or Cat 6 cabling guidance for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit adapters. Choosing a higher category by itself will not fix a loose plug, damaged cable, bad pair, or unsuitable route.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Reseat and inspect both ends
Unplug the Ethernet cable at each end and reconnect it firmly. Inspect the plug latch and jack, any coupler, and accessible portions of the cable for looseness or visible damage. If gently moving a connector causes the link to drop, suspect a faulty connection or termination; replace or reterminate the affected part. Cisco notes that RJ-45 connection points add signal loss and can become unreliable electrical contact points.
3. Find out whether the cable, port, or endpoint is at fault
- Temporarily connect the same computer and network equipment with a short, known-good cable.
- If the short cable stays connected, reconnect the long run and observe whether the dropouts return.
- Where practical, test the long run on a known-working port. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the fault follows the cable or a port or endpoint.
A stable short-cable link makes the long run or its connections more likely suspects, but does not prove which part has failed. If the problem follows one port or device when you swap cables, investigate that equipment, including link negotiation, power, and manufacturer-specific logs or diagnostics. Cisco’s general troubleshooting guidance treats either endpoint or the cable between them as possible causes of link loss.

4. Test the cable’s wiring
A basic Ethernet cable tester can identify common wire-map problems, such as opens, shorts, or miswiring, and may help reveal a faulty pair. Huawei advises testing the line pairs and replacing the cable if a pair reports a fault (Huawei cable-fault troubleshooting).
Some managed switches also provide cable diagnostics, but their availability and results depend on the device, port state, link speed, and cable. TP-Link cautions that a normal result does not necessarily verify every pair at every speed (TP-Link cable test guidance). A continuity or wire-map check is not the same as certification that a run will meet the performance requirements of its intended Ethernet speed.

If basic wiring checks pass but the link still drops, have the cable tested with equipment that checks Ethernet performance. Fluke says its LinkIQ tests and troubleshoots links from 10BASE-T to 10GBASE-T and provides distance-to-fault information (Fluke Networks LinkIQ capabilities). This is specialist equipment, not a necessary first step for most home users.

If the cable or connector is damaged, replace or reterminate the affected section. A known-good Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable appropriate to the route can help isolate the fault, but replacing a cable with a higher-category one will not correct bad contacts or poor termination.

If the route exceeds the copper channel limit, shorten it or use an active extension design rather than relying on a longer passive copper cable. For PoE, ENTTEC advises using a compliant PoE repeater or another switch and keeping each copper cable leg within 100 meters (ENTTEC PoE cable-length guidance). For other networks, choose switching or fiber appropriate to the devices, required bandwidth, and installation. For PoE extensions, confirm voltage and device compatibility before connecting equipment.
