To copy files over USB, unlock your Galaxy, allow access to phone data if prompted, then select Transferring files or MTP from the USB notification. On Windows, open File Explorer and choose the phone; photos are usually in its DCIM folder. If the phone only charges or does not appear, check the connection mode, cable, and computer port before reinstalling a driver.

How do I transfer files from my Samsung phone to a Windows computer?

  1. Unlock the Galaxy phone or tablet and connect it to the computer with a USB cable. If the devices have different connector types, use a compatible cable or adapter. Samsung’s file-transfer guidance notes that adapter needs depend on the devices.
  2. If the phone asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow.
  3. Swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the USB connection notification, and choose Transferring files or MTP. Depending on the software version, the label may read Transferring files / Android Auto; choose the file-transfer function, not Android Auto, for ordinary browsing.
  4. On the PC, open File Explorer and select the Galaxy device. Browse its internal storage, or open the SD card if files were saved there.
  5. Copy or drag files between the computer and the appropriate phone folder. Photos are commonly in DCIM on internal storage or in the SD card’s DCIM folder.

Samsung’s UK photo-transfer instructions, updated 29 May 2026, describe this Windows File Explorer workflow. The exact prompts and menu labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version, and the prompt may not reappear on a device that has connected before.

Why is my Samsung phone charging but not showing up on my PC?

A USB connection can provide power without enabling file browsing. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Check access and mode. Unlock the phone, accept an access prompt if shown, and use the USB notification to select Transferring files or MTP.
  2. Try a data-capable cable. Reseat both ends, then test with a cable known to carry data. Samsung cautions that “Not all USB cables can transfer data.” A cable that charges the phone may still be charge-only or unsuitable for data transfer.
  3. Try another computer USB port. If the phone and computer use different connector types, use a suitable adapter or cable.
  4. Test another supported computer if available. This can help narrow down whether the problem follows the phone or the computer, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance also covers cases where the PC or Mac does not detect a device or the MTP notification fails to appear. A failed connection does not establish that the cable or driver is necessarily at fault.

Do I need Samsung USB drivers?

Do not assume you need to find and install a standalone driver before connecting a Galaxy for ordinary file copies. First check the phone’s access prompt and transfer mode, then try a data-capable cable and another port. If Smart Switch cannot recognize the device, Samsung directs users to its built-in driver reinstall option:

  1. Disconnect the phone and restart it.
  2. Open Smart Switch on the PC or Mac and select More options (the three-dot menu).
  3. Choose Reinstall device driver and confirm.
  4. Reconnect the phone. Samsung notes that a computer restart may be needed before continuing.

This driver action is specifically part of Smart Switch troubleshooting; Samsung’s cited instructions do not establish universal standalone driver-installation steps for every Galaxy model and computer setup.

  • Reversible USB-C connector
  • 2a charging output
  • The cable also supports up to 3 Amps of power output for charging USB-C devices
  • Official Samsung Cable Comes in Retail Packaging

Which USB connection mode should I choose?

  • Transferring files / MTP: Select this for ordinary browsing and copying between the Galaxy and a computer.
  • Charging only: Supplies power but does not enable ordinary file transfer. Change the function from the USB notification if the phone is not browseable.
  • Android Auto, PTP, and other functions: These serve different purposes and may appear on some device and software combinations. For PC file browsing, choose the file-transfer option rather than Android Auto. A cable’s ability to carry data is separate from the mode selected on the phone.

Samsung’s general file-copy steps specify Transferring files or MTP; its UK photo instructions discuss a cable that supports MTP or PTP. That cable guidance does not mean PTP is the general recommendation for browsing all phone files.

Does the process work the same way on a Mac?

The documented File Explorer steps above are for Windows. Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting instructions cover both PC and Mac, including the driver-reinstall option when Smart Switch has trouble detecting the phone. The cited Samsung pages do not establish one current, universal Finder workflow for every Mac version, so do not assume the phone will mount in Finder. For a particular Galaxy and Mac setup, consult Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance or the model-specific support information.

What if I want to transfer without browsing the phone over USB?

  • Smart Switch: Samsung supports wired transfer between devices for migration. This is different from copying individual files through a PC file browser.
  • OTG flash drive: Some Galaxy devices can use a compatible USB OTG flash drive through the My Files app to copy or move supported files. External-storage support varies by model, so check the exact device before relying on this option.
  • Wireless or cloud methods: Samsung lists wireless, cloud, Quick Share/Nearby Share, and Samsung Flow options for some transfer needs; availability and steps depend on the devices and service.

Samsung also says media in Secure Folder cannot be transferred using the general file-moving methods in its US media-transfer guidance.
