The Norman Conquest brought a major expansion of castle building in England, giving the new rulers strongholds for military control and centres for local administration. Many early castles used earth-and-timber motte-and-bailey designs, but there was no single blueprint: builders adapted sites and forms to local terrain, existing defences, routes, settlements and estates.
How did Norman castles work?
A motte-and-bailey castle paired a raised mound, or motte, with a defended enclosure, or bailey. The mound was commonly topped by a timber tower and palisade; the bailey, often enclosed by banks and ditches, provided additional protected space. Some castles instead used a ringwork—a roughly circular bank and ditch, typically topped by a palisade—or a strongly defended enclosure without a motte. Hybrid designs also existed.
Castles could serve several purposes at once: they were military strongholds and garrisons, elite residences, and centres of royal or local administration. Their position could help dominate a locality or control a route or river crossing. Builders also sometimes reused earlier fortified places. English communities had defences before 1066, including burhs, but castles were introduced or greatly expanded as a tool of Norman rule.
Orderic Vitalis, quoted by English Heritage, wrote: “The fortifications that the Normans called castles were scarcely known in the English provinces, and so the English – in spite of their courage and love of fighting – could put up only a weak resistance to their enemies.” This is an attributed quotation from English Heritage; its page does not identify the edition or translation.

How did castles change over time?
Early earth-and-timber works were not all replaced in the same way or on the same timetable. Some timber defences later gave way to stone. English Heritage describes the growth of stone keeps in the 12th century and later shifts toward stronger outer defences: a sequence of adaptation, not a universal, rapid conversion of every early castle.
The scale of castle building is expressed in two different counts. Historic England’s undated list entry records over 600 motte or motte-and-bailey castles nationally; that refers to this monument class, not every castle built after 1066 or every surviving site. English Heritage’s undated page gives around 1,000 castles built in England and Wales over 150 years. The figures have different geographic, chronological and categorical scopes, so they should not be treated as competing counts of the same set.

How did castles reshape local landscapes?
A castle’s impact could extend well beyond its mound or enclosure. Its position and defences could reorganise a settlement, while its owners’ estates linked a stronghold to land, markets and institutions. The following sites illustrate distinct patterns rather than a standard plan followed across England.
Eye: castle, planned town and estate
Historic England dates the start of Eye Castle in Suffolk to 1066–1071, under William Malet. It was built on a natural spur between waterways and became a defining feature of a planned Norman town. Malet’s Honour of Eye was a large, multi-county landholding. His son Robert made Eye the centre of the estates and established a market, deer park and priory. Eye shows how a castle could anchor a wider town-and-estate landscape, though its particular history should not be assumed for every settlement.

Castle Acre: a connected complex
At Castle Acre in Norfolk, the surviving castle, planned town and priory together illustrate physical change associated with the Conquest. English Heritage describes the castle’s original form as hybrid, between motte-and-bailey and ringwork. The landscape evidence includes organisation around a castle residence, making the wider complex—not just a keep or mound—part of the story.
Thetford: a river crossing and earlier enclosure
Thetford Castle Hill occupies an important crossing of the Thet and Little Ouse rivers and incorporates an earlier Iron Age enclosure. Historic England describes it as a medieval motte-and-bailey castle believed to have been built shortly after the Conquest. Its builder is uncertain: Ralph Guader and Roger Bigod are both proposed. Buried earthworks and deposits preserve evidence of medieval and earlier occupation.

Hallaton: a likely estate centre
At Hallaton in Leicestershire, an elevated motte stands beside a bailey. Excavation has found evidence including iron-working in the bailey. Historic England says the castle seems likely to have served as the administrative centre of an estate described in Domesday. That is an archaeological interpretation, not a certain identification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can Domesday tell us about the changes?
The Domesday survey helps document landholders and land use after the Conquest, including changes in landholding since 1066, as described by The National Archives. Historic England connects Hallaton’s castle to an estate recorded in the survey. Domesday is not an inventory of every castle or landscape feature, and it cannot by itself establish every physical change on the ground.

What the examples show—and what they do not
These sites make clear why there is no single story of a Norman castle. Form, setting and function varied: a castle might occupy a river crossing or high ground, reuse an earlier enclosure, sit within a planned town, or serve an estate. The evidence also varies: some features survive above ground, others are known through buried remains, and some roles or origins remain interpretations. The broad change was substantial, but its local expression was not uniform.
