Raise it before accepting, clarify what the employer means by “hybrid,” and propose a specific arrangement tied to how you will do the work. If the location is essential for you, say so early; if it is a preference, explain your first choice and offer a practical fallback.
Clarify what the employer expects
Before proposing terms, find out how the arrangement works for this team. “Hybrid” can mean fixed office days, attendance that varies by project, or another schedule. Ask about the assigned office, required travel, location restrictions, and whether extra attendance can be arranged with notice. Harvard’s offer-evaluation guidance recommends assessing whether a role is remote or hybrid, how often office attendance is expected, and whether home-office setup assistance is available.
- How many days, or what percentage of time, are employees expected to be onsite?
- Are office days fixed, team-wide, or flexible?
- Which office is the assigned workplace, and are there limits on where you may work remotely?
- How often is work travel required, and how much notice is typical for additional in-person attendance?
- Is there a different schedule during onboarding, and is home-office assistance offered?
Prepare a specific proposal
Decide which terms are essential and which you can trade. Connect your request to the work: deliverables, availability, customer coverage, collaboration, and any in-person responsibilities. Research the overall offer as well as the location terms; Harvard advises considering compensation in light of role, field, location, and experience, while the University of Texas at Austin advises weighing your value and circumstances.
A useful proposal states the arrangement, attendance pattern, work location, and any flexibility you can offer. For instance, you might ask for two planned office days per month, while agreeing to weekly attendance during a defined onboarding period and a later schedule review. Treat that as an example to adapt, not a standard arrangement or a guarantee of agreement.

Raise it before accepting
Bring up the arrangement while the offer is under discussion, before you accept. If remote work is a condition of taking the role, state that clearly rather than treating it as a minor preference. Otherwise, lead with genuine enthusiasm, make one focused request, and show how you will meet the role’s needs.
You could say: “I’m excited about the role. Before I accept, could we confirm the work arrangement? My preference is [specific arrangement]. I can be in the office [specific cadence] and will plan for [meetings, onboarding, or other agreed needs]. If that exact schedule is difficult, could we discuss [fallback]?”

Decide in advance what you can compromise on, then offer one or two realistic alternatives. Career guidance from Penn Career Services treats remote or hybrid work as a negotiable offer term and recommends discussing requests as a package rather than making serial, isolated asks. UT Austin Career Services likewise recommends ranking priorities and giving the employer options when a particular term is difficult to change. Consider discussing location alongside related matters such as salary, benefits, travel, start date, and home-office support.
If the employer says no
Ask what is driving the requirement. It may relate to onboarding, client contact, security, team coordination, or a consistent company policy. Then test whether a narrower alternative would address the concern: fewer onsite days, clustered attendance, a temporary onboarding schedule followed by a review, another office, or travel with advance notice. UT Austin advises making realistic requests and offering options; Acas says employers should consider flexible options before a new employee starts.

Compare the terms and get them in writing
When comparing offers, assess more than the label “remote” or “hybrid.” Compare the actual office cadence, predictability, permitted work location, travel burden, home-office support, and whether the arrangement is stable or subject to review. Weigh those against salary, benefits, role scope, growth, and personal fit.

Before accepting, read the offer and any policy it incorporates. Ask for the agreed location, onsite schedule, travel expectations, and any trial or review period to be confirmed in writing. A policy document and an offer letter can interact differently depending on their terms and the applicable jurisdiction, so do not assume an informal understanding overrides written terms.

Great Britain
According to Acas guidance last updated 14 January 2026, an offered candidate can discuss flexible working informally before starting; the statutory right to request flexible working begins on the first day of employment. Eligible employee requests must be handled reasonably and can be accepted, partly accepted, or refused for a genuine business reason. If a change to contract terms is agreed, Acas says it must be put in writing within one month. GOV.UK’s overview says employees in Great Britain may request changes to hours, start or finish times, days, or location from their first day, and notes that Northern Ireland has different rules. Acas distinguishes disability-related reasonable-adjustment duties from an ordinary flexible-working request.
Australia
The Fair Work Ombudsman describes formal flexible-work requests for certain eligible employees and workplace rules that may apply to working from home. This is a separate system from the UK process; check current Australian guidance for your circumstances rather than applying another country’s rules.
