To put a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet in USB file-transfer mode, connect it to your computer, open the USB notification on the Galaxy, and select Transferring files / Android Auto, Transferring files, or MTP. Tap Allow if asked. On Windows, open File Explorer and select the Galaxy device.
Change the Galaxy USB connection to file transfer mode
- Unlock the Galaxy and connect it to the computer with a USB cable. Some device combinations may require a different cable or adapter. Samsung’s file-transfer instructions recommend unlocking the device before connecting.
- If the phone asks whether to allow the connection, tap Allow.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick panel or notification panel, then tap the USB charging notification.
- Select the file-transfer option shown. Depending on the device and software, it may be called Transferring files / Android Auto, Transferring files, or MTP. Samsung’s One UI 8.0 instructions use Transferring files / Android Auto. Samsung’s USB connection-mode steps show the One UI 8.0 wording.
- On Windows, open File Explorer and select the Galaxy device to browse or copy files. Samsung’s described workflow supports copying in either direction. Samsung’s Windows file-sharing guide gives the File Explorer steps.
Why the USB option may look different
Samsung says that Galaxy devices running One UI 8.0 and later default to Charging phone only. In that mode, the phone charges but does not expose its files for browsing; change the mode from the USB charging notification. Samsung’s One UI 8.0 guidance describes this default.
Names and available options can differ by software version, region, and model. Look for the choice that explicitly transfers files; some devices show MTP rather than the newer wording. Samsung’s Windows guide notes that device features and menus vary.
If the Galaxy only charges or does not appear
- Check the selected USB mode. Open the USB charging notification and choose a file-transfer option instead of charging only.
- Unlock and reconnect. Unlock the phone, unplug and reconnect it, and approve any connection permission prompt. Confirm that file transfer or MTP is selected.
- Try a data-capable cable and another port. Some USB cables only charge and cannot transfer files. Google’s Android file-transfer guidance recommends trying another cable if the computer does not recognize the device.
- Isolate the connection. Try another computer, or connect another device to the same computer port. Samsung also recommends checking support for the selected USB function and restarting both devices. Samsung’s connection-options guide covers these checks.
Windows File Explorer limits in Samsung’s workflow
Samsung’s documented Windows drag-and-drop workflow allows up to 100 files at a time, does not support moving entire folders, and does not allow a single file larger than 512 MB through that workflow. These limits apply to the workflow Samsung describes, not necessarily to other operating systems or transfer methods. Samsung’s Windows file-sharing guide lists the limits.

File browsing is different from moving everything to a new phone
USB file-transfer mode is for browsing and copying files between the Galaxy and a computer. For phone-to-phone migration, Samsung offers Smart Switch over cable or wirelessly; most wired phone-to-phone connections require a USB OTG adapter. Samsung’s file-transfer and Smart Switch guidance explains the separate use case.
