To track U.S. federal lobbying and campaign contributions linked to a defense contractor, search the company and relevant subsidiaries across LDA.gov and the Federal Election Commission (FEC), but keep each record type separate. LDA filings show reported lobbying activity and certain contribution disclosures; FEC records show committee activity, individual contributions, and some bundling disclosures. An employee contribution listing the contractor as an employer is not automatically a corporate donation.
Start by identifying the names and entities to search
Build a search list before collecting records. A contractor may appear under its corporate name, subsidiary names, political action committee (PAC), outside lobbying firm, or the client name on a lobbying filing. Search both the registrant and client fields: in-house lobbying may be reported under the company, while an outside firm may file on its behalf. Confirm that variants and subsidiaries refer to the entities you intend to include before combining results.
The LDA.gov public system lets users search registrations and quarterly reports: LDA public search system. Keep a note of each name searched and your entity-matching decisions so the search can be repeated.
Find lobbying registrations and quarterly activity
Search LDA registrations (LD-1) and quarterly lobbying activity reports (LD-2) by registrant, client, year, issue, government entity, and other available fields. Open each filing rather than relying on a search-result summary. The report identifies its period and parties, describes lobbying issues and government contacts, and reports lobbying income or expenses under the applicable reporting method. Official filing information and guidance are available from the Lobbying Disclosure Act database and the LDA legislation and guidance page.

For each filing, record the registrant, client, report period, issue descriptions, agencies or government entities, reported amount, filing ID, and filing date. Keep amendments and later filings in the record log rather than silently replacing an earlier filing. Lobbying amounts are not campaign contributions, and reported expenses should not be combined with contribution totals.
Search LDA contribution reports separately
LD-203 contribution reports are a distinct LDA disclosure channel. Search by contractor or registrant, lobbyist, filing period, contribution date, contribution type, contributor, payee, and honoree. Read the report details to establish who filed the report and who or what event was identified as recipient or honoree. The filing is not a complete census of political activity connected with the business, nor is a search-result count a company-wide contribution total.

Find individual contributions in FEC records
Search the FEC individual-contribution database using the contractor name as an employer and reasonable name variants. Narrow results by contributor, recipient committee, date, geography, and amount. FEC records include reported contributor name, employer or occupation, city and state, transaction date, amount, and receiving committee. The employer field is a reported attribute of an individual contributor: describe these as contributions by individuals listing the contractor as employer, not as corporate donations. Separate PAC records and bundling disclosures
Company PAC activity
Search FEC committee records for the contractor’s PAC and inspect committee receipts and disbursements as their own category. Attribute transactions to the committee as reported; do not merge them with the corporation’s activity or employees’ personal contributions. The OpenFEC API documentation describes committee and receipt data, including itemized receipts based on Schedule A. The API documents nightly data updates, but filed records remain important for checking the underlying information.

Lobbyist bundling
Where relevant, check lobbyist-bundling disclosures. Certain contributions collected or bundled by current LDA registrants, or by their established or controlled PACs, trigger special reporting under FEC rules. Bundling describes fundraising activity; it does not establish that the company supplied the contribution. Consult the FEC’s lobbyist-bundled contributions guidance when deciding which records apply.

For a contractor-by-contractor analysis, use separate columns and a common date window. Do not create one blended “political spending” total unless the scope and components are explicit.

Document the company and subsidiary names included, matching rules, time range, treatment of outside lobbyists, and whether the totals use filed or amended reports. Preserve filing IDs and links so another reader can reproduce the comparison. The official systems describe disclosure records and rules; they do not publish a single current all-company total for defense-contractor lobbying and political contributions. Any aggregate must therefore state its company universe, years, inclusion rules, and how employees, PACs, subsidiaries, and outside firms were handled.
