Record the date, value, unit, and whether you measured standing height or lying-down length.
What you need
- A firm, level floor and a flat wall without molding at the bottom.
- A flat, rigid object, such as a ruler or hardback book, to make a level mark.
- A metal tape measure to measure from the floor to the mark.
- A pencil or other way to mark the wall, if appropriate.

How to measure a child who can stand
- Prepare the child. Remove shoes, bulky clothing, hats, hair ornaments, and hairstyles that could interfere with the reading.
- Position them against the wall. Have the child stand straight with feet flat and together, legs straight, arms at their sides, and shoulders level. Their head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels should touch the wall where their body shape allows. Ask them to look straight ahead.
- Make the head mark. Hold the rigid object flat against the wall and level with the floor. Lower it until it touches the crown of the child’s head. Keep your eyes level with the object so you can make an accurate mark at its lower edge.
- Measure and record. Measure from the floor to the mark with the tape measure. Record the result to the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimetre, as the CDC method specifies.
For a similar approach for children aged two and older, Cambridge University Hospitals suggests using a flat object such as cardboard or a chopping board, and measuring at a wall or door frame. For children under two, measure length lying down
Growth guidance generally uses recumbent length (measured lying down) for children under two and standing height for children aged two or older who can stand. These measurements are not identical. The World Health Organization’s training guidance says standing height is about 0.7 cm less than recumbent length. If a child under two cannot be measured lying down, its protocol says to add 0.7 cm to a standing measurement to estimate length. If a child aged two or older cannot stand, it says to subtract 0.7 cm from recumbent length to estimate height. WHO child growth assessment job aid

These are protocol conversions, not a reason to treat standing height and lying-down length as interchangeable. Note which method you used, especially when sharing a result with a clinician or comparing it with an earlier measurement.
Record the result so it can be compared meaningfully
Write down the measurement date, height or length, unit, and method. For example: “14 May — 92.4 cm, standing height.” If you use inches, retain that unit consistently or clearly label any conversion. A dated record makes it easier to distinguish a new measurement from an older one and gives a clinician useful context.

How to interpret a measurement
A home measurement is a single data point; small differences between readings do not, by themselves, establish a growth trend. Growth charts help track growth over time and contribute to an overall health picture, but they are not stand-alone diagnostic tools. Accurate measurement and age calculation matter when plotting a result. CDC Growth Charts
In the United States, CDC recommends WHO growth standard charts from birth through age two and CDC growth charts from age two onward.
