For the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, 12 field hockey teams in each gender’s competition will qualify through a combination of host-nation, FIH Hockey Pro League, continental championship and Olympic Qualification Tournament routes. The top two teams at each of the four LA28 Olympic Qualification Tournaments will earn places. Qualification rules change by Olympic cycle, so Paris 2024 is a historical example—not the current pathway.
The FIH’s published LA28 qualification-system announcement sets out the current format. The detailed allocation rules for each route are cycle-specific.
How many teams qualify for LA28?
The published Los Angeles 2028 system provides for 12 teams in the men’s tournament and 12 in the women’s tournament. Those places are allocated through the host, the FIH Hockey Pro League, five continental championships and four Olympic Qualification Tournaments. A team’s route depends on the specific eligibility and allocation rules; world ranking alone does not qualify every team.
What are the LA28 qualification routes?
Host nation
The host can receive a place, subject to the eligibility conditions in the LA28 system. Those conditions should be checked in the official rules; the host-place condition used for Paris 2024 should not be assumed to apply to Los Angeles.

FIH Hockey Pro League
The Pro League is included as a route in the LA28 system. Its eligibility and place-allocation provisions are specific to this cycle, so consult the FIH LA28 announcement rather than treating participation or a particular ranking as a universal qualification rule.
Continental championships
Continental competitions provide direct Olympic places, but the events and allocation rules can differ from one Games to the next. The relevant LA28 continental competitions and their precise allocations are governed by the published system.

Olympic Qualification Tournaments
LA28 will have four Olympic Qualification Tournaments. The top two teams at each tournament qualify, provided they have not already secured a place through another route. This gives teams that miss direct qualification another opportunity, subject to the tournament’s eligibility rules.
Why do Olympic qualification rules change?
The pathway is set separately for each Olympic cycle. The number of tournaments, the continental events that award direct places, the host’s eligibility conditions and whether a Pro League route exists can all vary. For that reason, a past Games’ rules are useful context but not a substitute for the current cycle’s system.

Paris 2024 illustrates the difference. France had a host place in each gender after meeting the FIH condition of being ranked 25th or better in the world rankings after the Tokyo Games. Each of five continental champions earned a place, and the top three teams from each of two Olympic Qualification Tournaments qualified. The field was 12 teams per gender.

Does a continental runner-up qualify automatically?
No. A runner-up does not automatically inherit a direct place simply because the continental champion has already qualified. Under the Paris 2024 rules, if host France had also won the EuroHockey Championship, the runner-up would not have taken that direct place; it would have been allocated through the Olympic Qualification Tournaments. That example is specific to Paris, and the applicable LA28 rule must be checked in the LA28 system.
Can a team qualify after missing its continental championship?
Yes, if it earns a place through another route. For Paris 2024, India qualified by winning the Asian championship. Belgium, which finished second at the EuroHockey Championship, later earned its place by finishing in the top three at the Valencia Olympic Qualifier. These outcomes show how the continental and tournament routes worked in that cycle; they do not predict who will qualify for LA28.

The qualification system awards team places to National Olympic Committees (NOCs), rather than qualifying individual players independently through these routes. Each cycle’s system separately sets the squad limit. For Paris 2024, the limit was 16 athletes per squad; check the LA28 rules for its roster provisions.
When will the LA28 teams be known?
The full field will only be known after the relevant qualification competitions have been completed and places allocated under the LA28 rules. Until then, qualification routes describe how teams can earn places—not which teams will take them.
