You can read some voice messages as text using features built into Apple Messages, WhatsApp, or Google Messages. They are not universally automatic: WhatsApp and Google Messages require setup and a tap for each message, while Apple’s transcript availability depends on language support. Follow the steps for the app where the voice message arrived.
Which voice message transcription method should you use?

Transcribe a voice message in Apple Messages on iPhone
Apple’s iPhone guide says audio messages can include transcripts in select languages. Open the conversation and view the audio message; if transcription is available for the message and language, its transcript can appear with it. Apple directs users to its iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability page for supported languages.
Audio message retention is separate from transcription: tap Keep if you want to retain the recording. Otherwise, it is deleted from the conversation on that iPhone two minutes after it is sent or listened to. See Apple’s guide to sending and receiving audio messages.
Turn on WhatsApp voice message transcripts
WhatsApp transcripts are off until you enable them. Setup differs slightly between iPhone and Android, and the language choices are not identical.

WhatsApp on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats.
- Turn on Voice Message Transcripts.
- Choose a transcript language, then select Change to [language].
- In a chat, touch and hold the voice message and tap Transcribe. Tap the transcript area to expand it.
WhatsApp’s help page requires iOS 16 or later and Siri enabled. It lists 12 supported languages for iOS 16 and 20 for iOS 17 or later, so the available choices depend on the iPhone’s iOS version. Check WhatsApp’s current iPhone instructions for the language list.
WhatsApp on Android
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats.
- Turn on Voice Message Transcripts.
- Choose the language used in most of your received voice messages, then select Set up now or Wait for Wi-Fi.
- In a chat, touch and hold the voice message. Open the more-options menu if needed, then tap Transcribe. Tap the transcript area to expand it.
The current WhatsApp Android help page lists English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. WhatsApp warns that transcripts may contain errors.

Privacy and accuracy in WhatsApp
WhatsApp says voice message transcripts are generated on the device and that the message remains protected by end-to-end encryption. Its November 21, 2024 announcement states: “Transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages.” A transcript can still misrecognize speech, so check important names, dates, or instructions against the audio.

- Open the conversation containing the received voice message.
- Tap View transcript above the message.
- If that option is missing, open the profile menu and go to Messages settings > Voice message transcription.
- Turn on Show transcripts of voice messages, then return to the conversation.
Google says the transcript option is available when Live Captions are turned off. Its help page discusses Android 6.0 and later for some steps, but does not establish Android 6.0 as the minimum requirement for this transcription feature. See Google’s instructions for the current setting path.

Why is there no transcript option?
- The feature is not enabled: WhatsApp transcripts are opt-in. In Google Messages, check the voice message transcription setting.
- The language may not be supported: Apple supports select languages, and WhatsApp’s language options depend on platform and, on iPhone, iOS version.
- Google Messages may be affected by Live Captions: Google documents its transcript choice when Live Captions are off.
- You may need to select the message: WhatsApp requires you to choose Transcribe for each voice message; Google Messages uses View transcript.
- The app’s controls or availability may have changed: consult the linked app-specific help page for the latest instructions and supported languages.
Can Voice Memos transcribe a message from another app?
Apple Voice Memos can transcribe speech in recordings while recording or afterward. Apple’s iOS 26 guide specifies iPhone 12 or later and lists English (all variants), Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, with availability also varying by country or region. This is an option for supported audio recordings, not a documented universal way to import voice notes from every messaging app into Voice Memos. For a message that is still in a chat, first check whether that messaging app provides its own transcript feature.
