A productive home office starts with a workstation that fits your body, your tasks and the space you have—not with a particular desk or a list of purchases. Adjust your chair, screen and input devices first; then address lighting and movement. Add equipment only when it solves a specific problem.
Fit the workstation to you
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) notes that “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” Treat ergonomic measurements and posture cues as starting points, then adjust for your body and comfort. OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance recommends arranging the chair, work surface, display and input devices together.
- Support your feet: Aim to keep them supported rather than dangling. If your desk and chair height leave your feet unsupported, a footrest may help.
- Support your back: Adjust the chair to support your back. If you are adapting an existing chair, CDC/NIOSH notes that a rolled support can serve as a makeshift lumbar aid.
- Relax your shoulders: Position the keyboard so your shoulders can stay relaxed and your forearms and wrists remain aligned as you type.
- Keep controls close: Place the keyboard and pointing device within easy reach to avoid repeatedly reaching forward or sideways.
OSHA describes an adjustable chair as useful for support and varied sitting positions. When choosing a chair, consider how long you work at it, any symptoms or history of musculoskeletal problems, and your personal preferences; try chairs before buying if possible. CDC/NIOSH’s working-from-home guidance also discusses makeshift home setups.
Set up a laptop screen and keyboard
A laptop joins the screen and keyboard together, making it difficult to position both comfortably at once. CDC/NIOSH considers a separate external monitor more ideal for the display. As a starting point, place a monitor about an arm’s length away, with its top at or below eye level. Adjust from there to suit your vision and comfort.

If you use the laptop’s own display, a book or box can raise it temporarily. Once the screen is elevated, use a separate keyboard and mouse so you can position the input devices independently and keep them close enough to avoid reaching. OSHA’s purchasing guidance also describes a docking station as one way to position a laptop monitor appropriately.
| Option | What it helps with | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop stand | Raises the laptop’s built-in display. | If the raised screen makes the built-in keyboard awkward to use, add a separate keyboard and mouse. Check that the stand suits your device and desk. |
| External monitor | Provides a separate display surface whose position can be adjusted independently of the laptop keyboard. | Arrange it for comfortable viewing; an external keyboard and mouse let you position input devices separately. |
These are optional ways to solve a screen-position problem, not required purchases or guarantees of better productivity. The cited guidance does not establish a particular brand, model or tested product.

Reduce screen glare and light distractions
Before buying a filter or other accessory, try changing the layout. OSHA recommends placing the display at right angles to windows and other light sources. Use blinds or drapes to control incoming light when needed, and place task lighting so it does not reflect on the screen.
If you need more light for paper work, a desk lamp may help. Aim it at the papers rather than the display, and adjust the screen or lamp if reflections appear.

Build movement into the workday
A comfortable workstation is not a reason to remain still in one position all day. OSHA recommends changing position periodically, making small chair or backrest adjustments, stretching, standing for some tasks and walking around. Use opportunities that fit your work and home routine; the cited guidance does not establish one universal break interval as a proven productivity or injury-prevention threshold.
