1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a complete plug-in solar kit that is permitted where you live, suits your daytime electricity use, and can be mounted securely in an unshaded location. Before comparing prices or panel wattage, check local rules, the exact product’s compliance, your electrical setup, and any building or landlord restrictions. Rules differ by region: Great Britain’s plug-in solar route took effect on 27 August 2026 under an interim product specification, while Northern Ireland and other jurisdictions need separate checks.
Start with the kit, not the panel wattage
A plug-in solar panel is only one part of a system. The German DKE standards committee describes a qualifying device as including at least one PV module, a grid-connected inverter, a connection cable, a plug connection to the final circuit, and a mounting system. Check that the seller is offering a complete system and that its components are approved for use together, rather than assuming a panel alone is ready to connect. DKE’s FAQ on DIN VDE V 0126-95 sets out that system definition.
Compare the panels’ rated DC capacity separately from the inverter’s maximum AC output. A kit may have more panel nameplate watts than the inverter can deliver as AC power; some of the potential output can then be clipped. That does not automatically make a kit unsuitable, but it means the panel wattage alone does not tell you how much power can be supplied to household circuits. Energy Saving Trust’s buying checks explain this distinction.
Check whether the kit is allowed where you live
Plug-in solar rules are jurisdiction-specific. A product or connection route permitted in one country is not automatically suitable in another. Verify the current requirements for your country or region, and for your building and electricity network, before ordering.

| Where | What to check |
|---|---|
| Great Britain | The UK government says compliant plug-in solar kits became available to buy and use from 27 August 2026 under the UK Interim Product Specification. Confirm that the exact model you are considering meets that specification; do not infer compliance from a retailer’s general description. The government’s route covers plug-in solar, not plug-in batteries. Government announcement; specification and consultation outcome. |
| Northern Ireland | Energy Saving Trust says plug-in solar is not currently permitted in Northern Ireland. Check for a later change before buying; Great Britain’s route should not be assumed to apply there. Energy Saving Trust guidance. |
| Germany | Umweltbundesamt points buyers to the grid connection standard VDE-AR-N 4105 and product standard DIN VDE V 0126-95, and says to register the device in the Marktstammdatenregister. Check current authority guidance for the details that apply to your connection and meter. Umweltbundesamt guidance; Bundesnetzagentur FAQ. |
| Elsewhere, including the United States | Do not assume that UK or German requirements apply. Check local electrical code, utility or interconnection rules, product certification, and any landlord, strata, or building requirements before purchase. |
For Great Britain, the government’s interim specification and its September 2026 outcome are more relevant to current status than the earlier consultation document, which described the position before implementation. Read the consultation outcome and specification.
Match the location to your household’s use
Look for an unshaded position
Choose a place where the panels can receive direct sunlight without persistent shade from buildings, trees, balcony structures, or other obstacles. Energy Saving Trust does not recommend shaded or north-facing locations in its UK guidance. If the only available position is heavily shaded, the kit may produce too little to suit your needs. Choose orientation for yield and timing
South-facing modules tend to produce the most electricity over a year, according to Germany’s Umweltbundesamt. East- or west-facing panels can still perform well and may shift more generation toward morning or late afternoon. That timing can be useful if your household uses electricity during those hours; the best orientation is not necessarily the one with the highest annual yield if you cannot use much of its output. Umweltbundesamt’s guidance on balcony solar.
Check the structure and permissions
Before buying, get permission from the landlord, freeholder, or building manager where required, and check planning and insurance implications—particularly for listed or protected buildings. Confirm that the intended balcony, wall, or ground location can take the proposed mounting system and its wind exposure. Use manufacturer-recommended hardware compatible with the exact kit; generic brackets or improvised fixings may not provide a secure installation. Check wiring, socket, and fire-safety requirements
A plug-in kit still feeds electricity into a household circuit. Buy only a model that meets the applicable local product and grid requirements, and do not modify its plug, cable, inverter, or other components. In UK guidance, connect directly to a suitable mains socket rather than using an extension lead or improvised adapter. If you have an old rewireable fuse board or are uncertain about the wiring, ask a qualified electrician to assess it. Have a qualified electrician assess or install any new outdoor socket. Energy Saving Trust’s checks; the government’s electrical safety study.
For outdoor sockets, London Fire Brigade specifies at least IP65 in its guidance. It also advises residents to inform their local distribution network operator within 28 days. Treat both as London Fire Brigade guidance, and confirm the relevant socket and notification requirements with the appropriate authority for your location rather than assuming they apply everywhere. Size the system for electricity you can use
Estimate when you are home and what is running during daylight—such as refrigeration, networking equipment, or other always-on devices—then compare that demand with the kit’s inverter output and likely generation times. Electricity generated when household demand is low may not reduce your bill as much as power used immediately; the result also depends on your site, orientation, shading, and tariff.
For Great Britain, the government’s August 2026 announcement describes kits up to 800 W and estimates savings of up to £110 a year and up to 20% of average household electricity use. Those are government estimates, not guaranteed outcomes for a particular home. Actual generation and bill impact depend on the installation and on how much electricity the household uses while the kit is producing power. Once you have ruled out products that are not eligible where you live or cannot be safely mounted, compare the remaining systems on the details that affect installation and ownership:
- Exact-model compliance: Verify the model and configuration, not just the product category, against the applicable specification or certification route.
- Inverter AC limit and panel DC capacity: Check both figures so you understand the output ceiling and any possible clipping.
- Mounting compatibility: Confirm the supplied brackets suit your exact site, panel, and wind exposure. Ask the manufacturer about compatibility before substituting hardware.
- Support and ownership: Check warranty terms, repair arrangements, theft considerations, and recycling or disposal information.
- Household timing: Consider whether the kit’s likely generation hours overlap with your daytime electricity use.
Do not treat a battery as a routine add-on. The UK specification concerns plug-in solar rather than plug-in batteries; Umweltbundesamt says batteries often do not pay off for plug-in solar, and London Fire Brigade advises against connecting these systems to batteries for later use. Quick Recap
Use this buying sequence
- Check permission and local rules. Confirm that plug-in solar is allowed for your location and property, and identify the product specification, utility, registration, or notification steps that apply.
- Choose a feasible site. Identify an unshaded position, note its orientation and wind exposure, and verify that the building owner or manager permits the installation.
- Confirm electrical suitability. Check the socket and wiring; get a qualified electrician’s assessment where the installation or wiring calls for one.
- Shortlist complete, compatible kits. Verify exact-model eligibility and compare inverter AC output separately from panel DC capacity.
- Check mounting and aftercare. Confirm manufacturer-approved fixings, warranty and support, and the owner’s recycling or disposal information before ordering.
