Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with your phone’s storage breakdown, then reclaim space from apps and downloads you can restore. Before deleting photos, videos, or app data, verify that a separate copy exists and opens. The safest steps vary between iPhone and Android, and menus depend on your phone model and software version.
1. Find what is using your phone’s storage
On iPhone
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the recommendations and the storage listed for each app before choosing what to remove. Apple’s categories can include app content, items in the Files app, and Safari downloads, so inspect the breakdown rather than assuming an app itself is the problem. See Apple’s instructions for checking iPhone and iPad storage.
On Android
Open Settings > Storage, then select a category to see what it contains. Android menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and software version; consult your phone maker’s instructions if a setting is not where expected. Google’s Android storage guide describes the general options.
2. Recover app space without immediately erasing app data
Offload an iPhone app
In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select an app and choose Offload App, or use the offered option to offload unused apps. Offloading removes the app installation but keeps its documents and data; its icon can be tapped later to reinstall it, provided the app remains available. This is different from deleting the app, which removes related data. Apple explains the distinction in its iPhone storage guide.

Archive an Android app, if supported
Some Android devices offer app archiving, which removes an infrequently used app’s installation while saving personal app data and leaving its icon in place. The app can be downloaded again if it is still available in Google Play. Feature availability varies by device; check Google’s storage instructions for the applicable options.
For either platform, check specialized apps before offloading, archiving, or removing them. Confirm that their content is synced or backed up, and that you can sign in again. Platform-level app cleanup does not guarantee that every app’s data can be recovered.
3. Remove downloads you can get again
Look inside the apps that downloaded offline movies, music, podcasts, maps, or other content. Remove only items you no longer need offline or can fetch again; redownloading may require an internet connection, an active subscription, or continued availability in the source app. Apple recommends reviewing downloaded TV content and Files items, while Google covers downloaded media and files in its Android storage guide.

4. Make sure photos and videos are safe before removing phone copies
Google Photos
Before using Google Photos’ Free up space option, check that backup has completed for the specific photos and videos you want to keep, and confirm the Google account is the one you expect to use. Google warns users to ensure items are backed up before freeing device space. Removed device copies may remain visible in Google Photos and at photos.google.com, but may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery or be available offline. Viewing them depends on access to the account and, in many cases, an internet connection. Follow Google’s Android instructions or iPhone and iPad instructions.

iCloud Photos on iPhone
If you use iCloud Photos, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and check that Sync this iPhone and Optimize iPhone Storage are enabled. With the feature set up and enough iCloud capacity, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies are kept on the phone as needed. Check sync status and available iCloud storage before relying on it. Details are in Apple’s photo and video storage guide.
Keep a separate local copy
If you prefer not to rely only on a cloud account, copy selected files to a computer or compatible external destination. Google describes transferring Android files and folders to a computer over USB, and Apple recommends transferring selected photos and videos to a computer when more iPhone space is needed. Open the copied files at the destination before deleting the phone originals. A cable or USB flash drive may work for some devices, but check the phone’s connector, model compatibility, destination capacity, and whether the files can be accessed before you remove anything.

5. Treat cache and app storage differently on Android
Google distinguishes Clear cache, which removes temporary data, from Clear storage, which permanently deletes all app data. Clearing cache may make an app slower the next time it opens. Prefer cleanup controls inside the app first; inspect what it stores before using Clear storage, especially if the app may contain unsynced files, messages, or settings. See Google’s Android storage guide.
Choose cleanup steps by risk, not just by space
| Option | What it can free | Main dependency or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Offload an iPhone app | Installed app space | Documents and data remain, but the app must still be available to reinstall. Apple: iPhone storage guide. |
| Archive an Android app | App installation space | Support varies by device, and the app must still be available in Google Play to download again. Google: Android storage guide. |
| Remove offline downloads | Local media or files | Redownloading may need internet access, a subscription, or continued availability in the source app. Apple: storage guide; Google: storage guide. |
| Clear Android cache | Temporary app data | The app may load more slowly next time. Google: Android storage guide. |
| Clear Android app storage | App data | Google says this permanently deletes all app data, putting unsynced content at risk. Google: Android storage guide. |
| Remove backed-up photo and video copies | Local photo and video space | Requires completed backup and future account access; removed items may not appear in the built-in gallery or work offline. Google: Android and iPhone and iPad. |
| Optimize iPhone photo storage | Local photo and video space | Requires iCloud Photos, syncing, and adequate iCloud storage; originals are stored in iCloud. Apple: photo storage guide. |
| Transfer files to a computer or compatible external storage | Space occupied by transferred files | Requires a working transfer method and verified destination copies before deletion. Google: Android storage guide; Apple: photo storage guide. |
Prioritize steps that are reversible and preserve offline access. The right choice depends on the specific phone, whether content is synced, and whether you can still reach the relevant app or account.
