Eye-Fi was a specific brand of wireless SD card; “Wi-Fi SD card” is a general category that includes other products, such as Toshiba FlashAir. Today, neither the original Eye-Fi wireless service path nor FlashAir W-04’s associated app support should be treated as a straightforward, currently supported way to transfer photos. Whether an individual card works also depends on its generation, condition, camera model, and available setup software.

Eye-Fi is a brand; Wi-Fi SD card is a category

An Eye-Fi card is one particular product line: an SD memory card with wireless-transfer functionality. A Wi-Fi SD card is the broader category of memory cards with wireless features. Toshiba’s FlashAir W-04 is one distinct example, not another name for Eye-Fi.

There is no single transfer method that applies to every card in either group. Workflows and reliance on software or vendor services vary by product and device, so a broad label such as “Wi-Fi SD” does not establish how a particular card will connect or transfer files.

How Eye-Fi and FlashAir compare today

Question Eye-Fi Toshiba FlashAir W-04
What is it? A specific wireless SD card brand. A distinct Wi-Fi SD card product family.
Support status SanDisk’s support notice says Eye-Fi announced on June 30, 2016 that it would stop supporting products including SanDisk Eye-Fi cards. It advised users to stop wireless use no later than September 16, 2016 because some dependent services would shut down. SanDisk support notice. Kioxia’s notice dated December 11, 2025 identifies the W-04 series as discontinued and says related app distribution and product support would end March 31, 2026. Kioxia notice.
Compatibility Depends on the exact camera and its Eye-Fi support or settings; an Eye-Fi label alone does not guarantee linkage. Depends on the exact camera and card type. Kioxia’s checked-operation list is device-specific and excludes server-upload and peer-to-peer features. Kioxia W-04 checked-operation list.
Current buying guidance Consider a used card legacy hardware, not a current supported wireless solution. Consider a used W-04 a discontinued product, not a current supported recommendation.

Can you still use an Eye-Fi card?

The cited SanDisk notice concerns wireless support and dependent services; it does not establish that every Eye-Fi card has lost its ordinary SD storage function. Storage use depends on the condition of the individual card and whether it can be read by your camera or card reader. The notice does mean you should not assume the original wireless experience will work now.

Does a Wi-Fi SD card work in your camera?

Check the documentation for your exact camera model and the card’s exact generation before buying or setting up a card. Compatibility is not universal, and even a manufacturer’s compatibility list applies to the named devices and features it actually checked.

Example: Ricoh WG-7

Ricoh says the WG-7 supports listed FlashAir card types after a firmware update and initial setup, but explicitly states, “Eye-Fi linkage function is not supported.” Its FAQ also warns users not to format a FlashAir card in the camera. These instructions apply to the WG-7, not to cameras generally. Ricoh WG-7 FAQ.

Use compatibility lists within their limits

Kioxia notes that transfer procedures for W-04 can differ depending on whether the device has a FlashAir menu. Its checked-operation results do not cover server-upload or peer-to-peer functions, so a listed device is not proof that every feature or workflow will work. Kioxia W-04 checked-operation list.

What to verify before buying a used card

A marketplace listing does not establish that a card, app, camera, or original transfer flow will work today. Before spending money, check:

  • Card generation and model: For FlashAir, identify the exact W-04 model. Kioxia names SD-UWA016G, SD-UWA032G, and SD-UWA064G in its discontinuation notice.
  • Camera model: Look up the exact camera’s documentation for the card type, firmware requirement, setup steps, and any restrictions.
  • Software access: Confirm that any required setup software is available to you. Kioxia says W-04 app distribution and product support ended March 31, 2026.
  • Card condition: Ask about the card’s working condition; discontinued service status does not reveal whether a particular used card can still store files.
  • Feature scope: Confirm that the specific transfer feature you need is supported. A compatibility check may not include cloud uploads or peer-to-peer transfers.

What replaced Eye-Fi?

These sources do not establish a single direct replacement that is currently supported across cameras. FlashAir W-04 is a historical comparator, but it is discontinued and its associated app support and distribution ended March 31, 2026. Treat a used FlashAir W-04 listing as a legacy-product option and verify the exact camera and setup path before relying on it.
