If your iPhone says “Preparing Update” or “Installing” in Settings, Apple does not publish a universal timeout for those labels—so there is no reliable number of minutes after which you should interrupt it. If you see the Apple logo and a progress bar, leave the iPhone connected to power and give it time: the bar can move slowly, look static, or restart as the update proceeds. Troubleshoot network, storage, or update errors while the phone is still in Settings; use a force restart only if it is unresponsive.
First, identify which screen is stuck
- Settings still shows “Preparing Update” or “Installing”: Apple’s guidance does not set a standard wait time for either status. Avoid relying on a made-up timer; use the checks below if an error appears or the process cannot continue.
- Apple logo and progress bar: A slow or apparently motionless bar is not, by itself, proof the update has failed. Apple says the bar may move slowly or appear static, and the process can vary with the number of files and type of operation. It may also start again. Keep the iPhone connected to power while it works. Apple’s progress-bar guidance notes that pressing a button may display an “updating” message, which means the update is still in progress.
- Screen is unresponsive: A force restart is appropriate when the iPhone will not respond, rather than simply because a progress bar is slow. Follow the model-specific steps below.
If the update is still in Settings or shows an error
Wireless updates depend on a compatible iPhone, an internet connection, and enough available storage. Download time varies with the update’s size and internet speed. For a slow download, connect to Wi-Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time. Keep the phone connected to power during a wireless update. Apple’s iPhone and iPad update troubleshooting guide covers these requirements and retry options.
Retry a network or verification error
- Try again on the same network.
- If the alert returns, connect to a different network and retry.
- If it still fails, try updating with a Mac or PC using the applicable Apple software.
- If the problem persists after trying multiple networks, remove the downloaded update and download it again from Settings.
Delete and redownload a failed update
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and select the iOS update, if it appears, then tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, or reinstalling it fails, Apple directs users to update with a Mac or iTunes.
Force-restart only an unresponsive iPhone
A force restart does not address an ordinary slow progress bar. Use the sequence for your model if the phone is unresponsive. Apple’s restart instructions specify:

When to use a computer and recovery mode
Apple’s one-hour threshold is for a specific case: a progress bar that has not moved for at least an hour during an iPhone restore from backup or migration on iOS 13 or later. It is not a universal timeout for a wireless update or the “Preparing Update” screen.
- Confirm that the Apple-logo progress bar has not moved for at least one hour in that restore or migration scenario.
- Connect the iPhone to a computer and put it into recovery mode using the model-specific steps in Apple’s stuck-on-Apple-logo guide.
- When prompted, choose Update first. Use Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later; iTunes on macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier; or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on a PC.
Do not choose Restore unless you accept erasing the iPhone. Apple states: “If you choose Restore, it will erase your iPhone.”

When to contact Apple for service
If the iPhone still displays the Apple logo and progress bar after the update or restore attempt, Apple says service may be needed. Its progress-bar support page gives that escalation guidance.
