Self-hosting Odoo can mean free software, but it does not mean a free system. A small business must account for its Odoo edition or subscription, server, backups, setup and migration, and the time or paid help needed to operate and secure it. One public server price reference is $24 per month for a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet with 4 GiB RAM and 2 vCPUs; that is a provider price, not a recommendation that the VM will suit a particular Odoo workload.

What does self-hosting Odoo cost?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all monthly total. The bill depends on whether you use Community or Enterprise, where and how you host it, how much data you retain, whether you need custom modules, and who handles administration. A low server bill can still accompany significant implementation and operating costs.

Use this worksheet rather than treating a server price as the full cost:

  • Monthly cash outlay = Odoo subscription, if applicable + server or platform + backup and storage + domain, email, or other services + paid support and maintenance.
  • First-year total cost = setup and migration + 12 × monthly cash outlay + internal staff time.

For a useful estimate, specify the country and currency, edition, number of paying users, server region and size, expected data growth, backup retention, custom modules, and who will run the system. Without those assumptions, the $24 server example below is the only concrete infrastructure figure—not a complete Odoo budget.

Which costs belong in the budget?

Odoo edition and subscription

Odoo describes Community as free and open source under LGPLv3; Enterprise is a separate edition with additional functionality and subscription terms. So “Odoo is free” is accurate only when it refers to the Community software itself, not necessarily the complete deployment or every feature a business wants. Review Odoo’s edition information and current pricing and hosting options before comparing costs. Both the pricing page and its offers can change over time and by selection.

Odoo’s live configurator displayed a one-user, all-app example at US$49 per month billed annually after a first-year discount when accessed on October 4, 2026. This is a dynamic, selection- and location-dependent example, not a universal or enduring quote; check the live configurator for the business’s actual terms. Enterprise subscription costs are separate from the cost of running a self-managed server.

Server, storage, and region

A rented virtual private server (VPS) is one way to host Odoo yourself. DigitalOcean’s live pricing page listed a Basic Droplet with 4 GiB RAM and 2 vCPUs for $24 per month when accessed on October 4, 2026. That is a provider-specific price point, not evidence that this size will support a particular number of users or workload. The final bill can vary with region, currency, tax, storage needs, and plan changes; DigitalOcean also lists backup options separately. Check its current Droplet prices before budgeting.

Odoo’s 16.0 administration documentation describes installation approaches, but it does not establish a universal minimum server size for every small business. Workload, data, integrations, and availability needs matter. Treat a VPS price as an input to a deployment estimate, not as a capacity guarantee.

Backups and recovery

Self-managed hosting means planning and paying for backup storage, retention, and a way to restore service. A backup file alone is not a recovery plan: the business needs a tested process, a clear recovery owner, and an understanding of how much data or downtime it can tolerate.

Odoo says its own plans include incremental daily backups on two continents. That managed inclusion should not be assumed to apply to a self-managed server. DigitalOcean’s listed backup options are separately priced, with charges depending on the option. Compare retention and restore arrangements as well as storage cost.

Implementation and migration

Installing the software does not configure business processes or prepare a team to use them. Odoo identifies implementation work such as project management, analysis, data imports, customization, development, and training, and says implementation services are outside subscription plans. The cost depends on scope and provider; no universal implementation price is established.

Ongoing operations and staff time

Someone must handle operating-system and Odoo upgrades, PostgreSQL and server maintenance, security, monitoring, incident response, backup checks, and maintenance of custom code. That may be an employee or a contractor, but it is still part of the cost of ownership, even when it does not appear on the hosting invoice.

Odoo’s 16.0 administration documentation notes that using packaged installers for long-term production requires additional deployment and maintenance work. No general labor rate or standard monthly operations total is established, so price the time against the business’s actual staffing or support arrangement.

How do self-hosting, Odoo Online, and Odoo.sh differ?

These options shift costs and responsibilities differently. The available official information does not provide a like-for-like total for all three, so the comparison is about what to include—not a claim that one is always cheapest.

Option Hosting and subscriptions Custom modules Operational responsibility
Self-managed VPS The business pays a server provider; Community software is free and open source, while Enterprise use can involve a subscription. Backups and other services may be additional. The business manages its deployment and compatibility. The exact fit depends on the modules and deployment. The business or its contractor operates the server, backups, security, upgrades, and recovery.
Odoo Online Odoo’s pricing page describes hosting as included in its plans. Odoo says standard Online hosting does not support custom modules; check compatibility before choosing it. Odoo provides the hosting, reducing the infrastructure work the business must manage itself.
Odoo.sh Odoo describes it as its official cloud platform for hosting and managing Odoo applications. Creating a project requires an Enterprise subscription that includes Odoo.sh. Designed to support custom-development workflows; account for platform terms and development or staging needs. Odoo manages the platform, while the business still needs to plan its implementation and development work.

For current plan details, see Odoo’s pricing page, its Odoo.sh documentation, and the Odoo 18.0 project setup instructions. Terms and included features can change; verify the subscription needed for the particular project.

How to build a decision-ready estimate

  1. Choose the edition and deployment. Decide whether Community meets the feature needs or whether an Enterprise subscription is required. Then determine whether custom modules rule out standard Odoo Online.
  2. Define the workload and service expectations. Record backend users, transactions and peak load, data growth, integrations, required uptime, and data-region needs. Do not infer server capacity from a provider’s entry-level price.
  3. Price infrastructure and recovery together. Get current local server or platform pricing, then add storage, backup retention, restore needs, and any other services the deployment requires.
  4. Scope implementation. Include workflow configuration, imports and migration, email and access controls, customizations, and staff training that apply to the business.
  5. Assign operations and price the time. Identify who will patch, upgrade, monitor, secure, and restore the system, and how custom code will be maintained. Include employee time or contractor support in the first-year comparison.
  6. Compare first-year and recurring costs. Use the worksheet above, separating one-time implementation from recurring cash costs and staff time. Compare self-hosting with Odoo Online and Odoo.sh using the same workload and recovery expectations.

When can you calculate a credible total?

A personalized total requires at least the business’s country, number of backend users, transaction and load expectations, custom-module requirements, uptime target, backup retention, and the person or provider responsible for administration. Then obtain current local infrastructure and platform quotes and estimate implementation, labor, and recovery costs explicitly. Without those inputs, a precise monthly total would imply certainty that the available prices do not support.
