Google says Chrome will delete the model files and stop downloading them again while the setting remains off. Features that rely on those local models will no longer work.
Remove Chrome’s on-device AI model files
- Open Chrome on the computer where you want to free up space.
- Select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open AI Innovations.
- Turn On-device AI off.
Google describes this setting as the supported way to manage Chrome’s generative AI models. Chrome removes its on-device model files and does not download them again while the toggle is off. The setting applies per user and per device, so the choice on one device does not automatically change it on another. Google Chrome Help
What changes when you turn off On-device AI?
Features that require Chrome’s local generative AI models stop working while the setting is off. Google lists possible uses such as writing or rephrasing help, scam warnings, webpage summaries, and tab organization. Other Chrome AI features that do not depend on on-device generative models may continue to work.
To use model-dependent features again, turn On-device AI back on. Chrome may download the required models when device conditions are met. Google’s help page describes eligibility as requiring an unmetered connection, sufficient device performance, and about 20 GB of minimum free disk space. That is an approximate free-space requirement for downloading—not the size of the model files. Google notes that device requirements may change. Google Chrome Help

Why deleting files manually or clearing history may not work
Don’t manually hunt for model files
Google says, “This toggle in Chrome settings is the only supported method for managing generative AI models.” Deleting files from Chrome’s folders manually may not prevent Chrome from downloading them again if the setting still permits downloads. Google Chrome Help
Download history is only a list
Clearing Chrome’s download history removes the entries shown in the download list; it does not delete the downloaded files from the computer. Clearing browsing data removes only the categories you select, such as cached files, cookies, or site data. Google does not document either action as the control for removing Chrome’s on-device AI models. Google Chrome Help: Delete browsing data in Chrome

If AI Innovations is missing or unavailable
Chrome’s model requirements and interface can change, and the setting may be controlled by an organization on a managed device. If the toggle is absent or appears controlled, check with your organization’s administrator rather than deleting Chrome files manually.
In Chrome Enterprise deployments, administrators can manage the Local foundational model settings policy on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The default is Download model automatically; administrators can instead choose Do not download model. Google also says the Component updates setting can be used to prevent model downloads. These are administrator controls, not necessarily options an individual user can change. Chrome Enterprise policy: Local foundational model settings

Check other storage use on a Chromebook
If a Chromebook is still low on space after removing the model files, review the broader storage breakdown at Settings > System preferences > Storage management. Google’s storage guidance covers downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and files belonging to other users. You can remove unneeded files, uninstall unused apps, or remove extra local user accounts as appropriate; those are general storage steps, separate from Chrome’s model-removal toggle.
