To migrate a Google Gem into a Gemini skill, save the Gem’s Knowledge files separately, copy its name, description, and instructions into a new skill, then download and re-upload the skill folder with those files. The transfer preserves the material you move, but it does not guarantee that every Gem tool or feature will work in the skill. Keep the original until you have checked the result.
Before you start: decide which kind of skill you mean
Google’s manual procedure recreates a Gem as a Gemini skill. If your destination is Codex or another platform, the Markdown-based SKILL.md format may provide a starting point, but tools, installation, and behavior can differ. Google says skills created on other platforms can be imported, while OpenAI says skill support and availability vary by product and surface: Google’s transition guide, OpenAI’s skills guide.
The steps below are for a Gemini skill. For a Workspace skill, check the separate rollout and migration notes near the end.
Migrate a Gem to a Gemini skill
- Save the Knowledge files. Open the Gem for editing and download each file listed under Knowledge. Make a local folder for the skill using a lowercase name with hyphens between words. Keep the Gem open while you work. Google’s manual instructions are in About the transition from Gems to skills.
- Create a skill and copy the Gem’s text fields. In Gemini, go to Settings → Skills → Create manually. Copy the Gem’s name, description, and instructions into the corresponding skill fields, then create the skill. Google says the skill name is automatically updated to the required format.
- Download the generated skill file. Open the new skill’s actions menu and choose the download option. Google says this downloads a ZIP containing
SKILL.md. - Put the files together. Unzip the download and move
SKILL.mdinto the local folder containing the Knowledge files. The folder name must match the skill name. For folder uploads,SKILL.mdmust be at the root of that folder, not nested in another directory. See Create and manage skills for Gemini Apps. - Replace the skill with the complete folder. Return to the same skill’s actions menu, choose Replace skill, and upload the folder containing
SKILL.mdand its reference files. - Inspect and test it. Open the skill and check that the name, description, and instructions are present and that every intended Knowledge file is included. Try the tasks that matter to you before relying on it.
Check file and upload requirements
Do not assume that copying the instruction box also transfers the Gem’s Knowledge attachments: Google’s procedure handles those files separately. Before uploading, check the current requirements in Google’s skills management guide.

- The skill name must be lowercase, with words separated by hyphens.
SKILL.mdmust be in the root of the uploaded folder.- Google lists supported readable content formats including Markdown and text, common code and data formats, HTML, CSS, SVG, and some media. Binary office files such as DOCX, XLSX, and DOC are not supported.
- The total upload limit is 100 MB.
- Scripts that require internet access are not supported.
Keep a local copy of the original Gem text and downloaded files until the skill has passed your checks. The documented procedure transfers separate pieces through separate steps; Google does not guarantee that every attachment type or Gem capability will be preserved identically.
Expect some Gem features not to transfer
A complete folder upload is not the same as feature parity. Google says most default tools available in Gems do not work with skills for now, and GitHub files are not currently supported in skills. If the Gem depends on tools or a linked repository, test that workflow specifically and adapt it to capabilities available in the destination. See Google’s transition guide.

Google also describes automatic migration of remaining Gemini-app Gems into draft skills. Creators must review and activate those drafts. That Google transition is distinct from manually recreating a Gem or exporting a skill to another vendor; for high-priority Gems, Google recommends manual rebuilding and re-uploading files to help verify prompts and maintain workflows. Moving the workflow to Codex or another platform
Google says users can import skills created on other platforms by uploading their SKILL.md files. OpenAI describes skills as reusable workflows that can include instructions, examples, code, and supporting resources, and says skills can be supported in Codex and other OpenAI products. However, availability, installation, and syncing differ across products and surfaces. An imported Markdown file is therefore a starting point, not proof that platform-specific tools, triggers, or behavior will work unchanged. Read Google’s format and upload requirements and OpenAI’s skills guidance, then adapt and test the workflow in its destination.

Workspace skills and Gemini-app skills are separate
Google Workspace Help, last updated September 30, 2026, says Gemini-app skills and Workspace skills do not currently sync. Users who need a skill across both platforms, or who are transitioning Gems used in Workspace, must manually recreate them in Google Workspace Studio. The same guidance gives these announced rollout milestones; they are dated plans and may change, so check Google’s live transition page before planning a migration:

The transition dates differ by user segment, and an announced “no sooner than” date is not a guarantee that service ends on that exact day.
