Yes—install the newest iOS update Apple offers for your specific iPhone, even if it cannot run the newest major iOS version. A phone missing the latest major release may still receive security updates on an older iOS branch. Check the update available for your exact model rather than assuming it is unsupported because of its age.
How to check for an update your iPhone can install
- Identify your model and installed software: Open Settings > General > About. Apple’s guide to finding your iPhone’s model and software information covers this screen.
- Check for compatible software: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple says this screen shows updates compatible with your iPhone; follow its instructions to install the latest iOS software compatible with that model. See Apple’s instructions for updating an iPhone.
- Back up before installing: Apple recommends backing up the iPhone before downloading new software. Use the backup method that works for you, then return to Software Update and install the offered update.
Older iPhones can receive updates on older iOS branches
Apple’s security-release list, checked October 4, 2026, illustrates the difference between the newest major iOS and the latest update available to a particular device. It lists iOS 27.0.1 for iPhone 11 and later, dated September 28, 2026, alongside releases for older models:

| iOS 15.8.8 | iPhone 6s models, iPhone 7 models, and first-generation iPhone SE | May 11, 2026 |
These are examples from Apple’s security releases list, not a promise that any model will keep receiving updates. The Software Update screen on your own phone is the practical check for what it can install.
What security updates do—and do not—tell you
Apple says, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” Its security guidance also describes a specific set of web attacks: the page says updated iOS versions from iOS 15 through iOS 26 were protected against the attacks it discusses. Apple recorded a March 11, 2026 update for iOS 15 and iOS 16 to extend protection to older devices unable to update to the latest iOS, and says devices on iOS 13 or iOS 14 must update to iOS 15 to receive those protections. Read the details in Apple’s security advice.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That guidance concerns the attacks described on Apple’s page; it is not a guarantee that every older iOS version is safe from every threat. Receiving an update on an older branch is useful, but it does not make that device equivalent to one running the newest major iOS.
When to keep the phone and when to consider replacing it
There is no universal replacement deadline established by Apple’s published release information. If Apple no longer offers security updates for your model, using it carries greater security risk; replacing it is a cautious option, not an Apple-mandated date. Also weigh whether the device still works reliably and supports the apps and services you need. App compatibility varies, so check the requirements for the particular apps you rely on.

- Security: Is an update available for this model and its installed iOS branch?
- Apps and services: Do the specific apps and services you use still support the phone?
- Condition and use: Does it work reliably for your everyday tasks?
- Cost: Is keeping or servicing this phone reasonable compared with moving to a supported device?
The newest iOS is not automatically a prerequisite for everyone’s continued use. But if security updates have stopped—or the phone no longer meets your needs—consider moving to a device that receives updates. Apple’s release history does not establish how long any particular model will continue to be supported, so recheck the live Software Update screen and security releases when making that decision.
